Help the Lesvos Refugee Crisis

My name is John Skene and I am Business student in Victoria, Canada. Throughout my education I have focused on sustainable/social development and have incorporated this in my work within my local community. I've been active in the community, volunteering with the Victoria Cool Aid Society and AIDS Vancouver Island.

I’ve recently been moved to do something in response to the growing refugee crisis in Lesvos, a Greek island that is getting overwhelmed by the thousands of Syrian refugees who make the 4 mile journey by dinghy from Turkey.

In my research, it has been completely disheartening to learn that international agencies and governments have egregiously been missing from the grassroots humanitarian aid mission that I will be involved with. Most communication with my volunteer director has been through a Google Doc and social media.

I know many people have wanted to help this cause in some way but feel like there is no direct way they can contribute. I too felt this way and I hope to be representing all of Victoria and Canada while I am in Greece. From November 10-21 I will be working in the Oxy camp with this group of volunteers

The last few days have been incredibly difficult but I have been able to work with thousands of refugees at the very beginning of their European journey. The support I have received has been tremendous and I am really appreciative of any and all support you are able to give.

John, I have been extremely moved by the pictures your mom (my cousin) has been posting on FB. Although I have never met you, this is one of the greatest humanitarian efforts I have followed. Someday I hope to meet you and shake your hand.

I can't give much of a donation but I really appreciate what you are doing for the Syrian refugees. Thank you for caring and taking action. Being on the ground will be difficult but I know your efforts will be more than welcomed. Good luck and may you have a safe journey! My thoughts and prayers will be with you.
