Charlotte Jirousek was an internationally respected scholar of costume history, and a professor, curator and inspiring teacher in the textiles and apparel department at Cornell University.  She completed this book manuscript just before she died in 2014.

More Than Oriental Splendor is her most important work, the result of fifteen years of international research and writing.  Editors and peer readers have called the scholarship brilliant and original. It re-examines the history of dress and fashion in the broader context of western relationships with the Ottoman Empire and the Mediterranean world from the dawn of Islam to the twentieth century.

This book will interest scholars of dress studies and material culture, art historians, and social and cultural historians, as well as anyone who studies fashion and cultural history.

Indiana University Press will be publishing it, possibly as soon as the fall of 2017.

However, like most scholarly presses, they cannot afford the price of high quality color printing, professional indexing, and the many fees for reprinting the copyrighted images used in this heavily illustrated book.

We as Charlotte Jirousek's daughters must raise this money by March 2017. The printing will be about $4000, the indexing about $2000 and the permissions are estimated at around $8000. Any funds we raise over this amount will be spent on promoting this book to make sure it reaches the widest possible audience.

We will be extremely grateful for any amount you can give to support the publication of this important and timely work.

Pardon the long silence! So many details to sort out. However, I just heard from IUP, and they have scheduled the book for March 2019.

Hello dear donors! More Than Oriental Splendor is still pre-production at Indiana University Press due to some minor issues with the 196 images, and a decision to have it fact-checked. So it is not likely to be out in 2017 — however, they are excited about it, the pieces are falling into place, and when I have news it will be posted here, on FB and the website!

Today is manuscript submission day! Almost all the files are uploaded and almost all the parts are in place--just waiting on paperwork for a few more copyright permissions. I even have an indexer lined up. And thanks to all of you, I think we might actually break even (unless we do some promotion--which I figure we will). Thank you so much, again.

I now have a little over half of the 205 image copyright permissions needed for this book, and so far all have been paid for by your donations! Old friends and colleagues continue to be extremely helpful with this process. The editing of the manuscript is going well and I am on schedule for the March 31 submission deadline to Indiana University Press, when our payment for the quality color printing will be due.
