This small donation means a child like Maisie can stay close to her family at Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon—a temporary home for families who must travel to Vancouver for their seriously ill child’s medical treatment. For Maisie, the best part of staying at the House was playing in the Magic Room, a room filled with toys and interactive holograms.
The Jayawickreme Family
At the young age of 4, Maisie was rushed from Nanaimo to BC Children's Hospital with a rare symptom of a virus. She was partially paralyzed on the right side of her body, and doctors were unsure how much movement she would recover, or if she'd walk again. During Maisie's treatment, her mom and dad were able to stay at Ronald McDonald House, and elder brother Noah visited every weekend from Nanaimo—allowing the Jayawickreme family to stay together during this trying time. When Maisie was strong enough to periodically stay over at the House with her family, she would frequent the Magic Room, a play room featuring interactive holograms. It was in this very room that Maisie stood up one day, found her balance, and started walking for the first time since her illness—a magical moment that the Jayawickreme family will never forget.

For over thirty years, Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon has been providing accommodation for seriously ill children and their families when they must travel to Vancouver for their child’s major treatment. The House serves 2,000 families each year in 73 spacious suites.
On June 2, 2014, the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Surrey Memorial Hospital was also opened. A House within the hospital, the Ronald McDonald Family Room serves over 700 families each year, and is a welcoming refuge for families of children admitted for treatment.
