Daniel Sonai Thompson born November 27, 2013, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma cancer at the young age of 8 months.   It's hard as a mother and father to watch their child fight aginst cancer before he even begins to walk.

Daniel started treatment right away and went through a series of chemo treatments, laser surgeries, countless MRI's, vision testing and pokes and prods. He however, took it like a champ and kept a smile on his face.

What is Retinoblastoma?
Retinoblastoma is cancer that starts in the retina, the very back part of the eye. It is the most common type of eye cancer in children.

How does retinoblastoma develop?
The eyes develop very early as babies grow in the womb. During the early stages of development, the eyes have cells called retinoblasts that divide into new cells and fill the retina. At a certain point, the cells stop dividing and develop into mature retinal cells.

Rarely, something goes wrong with this process. Instead of maturing into special cells that detect light, some retinoblasts continue to divide and grow out of control, forming cancer known as retinoblastoma.

Daniel's cancer went into remission after his first round of chemo and smiles were shown all around; until after his three-month visit showed that the cancer had returned.   Daniel started his treatment regimen again and again, he was a champion with his smiles. His cancer went into remission once again but then his three-month MRI showed that the tumor had  returned.  The doctors strongly suggested removing his eye, which they did on Thursday, March 3rd, 2016.

It's been a long journey but Daniel's fight against retinoblastoma cancer is finally over.  God's healing touch has been manifested, and so after over a 1 and 1/2 years of treatments and enucleation, I'm still as strong as my name "Daniel" and destined for greatness.

Thanks to all our supporters, friends, prayer circles, and family. We rejoice and give thanks to God and his supporting cast at Children's Hospital (Alabama) and Callahan Eye Hospital.

As anyone can imagine, the cost that surrounds any family going through this fight is an uphill battle.  Our family and friends have helped support us in so many ways but the cost of treatment outweighs any insurance that we carry.  We are thankful for the kindness from any of you that are able to help in this struggle and thank our Lord every day that Daniel's smile is visible for all to see.
