Cardiac defect surgery for Jazzy’s twin brother Lev.
End 2018 the twins Jazzy & Lev Hanssen had to come into this world very prematurely because they were compromised by a condition called Twin to Twin Transfusion (TTTS). Despite being acutely very ill from the very first moments of their life, both boys fought hard for more than 100 days in the NCIU and thankfully, with outstanding medical support of the NICU and emotional support by their loving family, they survived and thrived beautifully. A truly trying period for Rubin and Nadine, as well as for their 5 year old daughter Myles. An often desperate situation which they mastered with such dedication and utter care for their boys. And now they are all so happy that Jazzy and Lev are finally home.
However, as a consequence Lev also developed a cardiac defect called PDA. Extra blood is pumped from the body into his lungs and this excess requires the heart & lungs to work harder, which weakens him, makes him fatigue easily and impacts his development and growth. Surgical repair, closure of the PDA, is desperately required for his proper growth & future development.
This will come along, with yet again significant out of pocket costs.
The tens of thousands of dollars Rubin and Nadine have to pay for the more than 100 days of hospitalized care, already post a heavy burden on them. Finding even more means for Lev’s desperately required procedure is a true concern.
Through this gofundme initiative I’m hoping that all of us together can partially ease this huge financial concern and help enable that Lev will receive the important surgery he needs, while allowing Rubin and Nadine to focus as much of their attention as possible to the care of their family, instead of to frightening numbers.
I can imagine that for the many, many friends of Rubin and Nadine in the Netherlands, it must sound almost unimaginable that healthcare in the USA can come at such significant costs to oneself, even if you responsibly assured excellent insurance coverage for your family, like Rubin and Nadine did. But this is real, as I can assure you from my personal experience of living in the US for many years.
Those of you who know Rubin and Nadine and their humble and can-do nature well, can imagine that it took me some convincing to allow me to start this initiative on their behalf with their blessing.
I truly hope that we can show them that community is real and that the community can be there for their boys, for them, for Myles. Also financially. And that the community will support them in the past, as well as in the upcoming and needed brave fight of Lev in the near future. So that all of them together will be strong and more carefree. Because of all of you.
And please remember that every amount, small or large, will help.
