The Issue -

Ireland has one of the strictest abortion laws among developed countries.  There have been no changes since the early '80s, when the Eighth Amendment to Ireland’s Constitution was passed, to allow abortion only where the mother’s life is at risk. No other reason is allowed.

It was a highly contentious issue then, and it will have the same polarizing effect when the Irish people go to a referendum on May 25th, to decide whether or not to repeal the amendment.  Feelings on both sides of the question are fierce, and neither side trusts the other to “play fair”.

Who We Are & What We're Doing -
SDAI-ADID is a small Canadian-based NGO interested in supporting and strengthening democracy through election observation. We are sending an international election observation team to Ireland to observe whether or not the two sides do "play fair",  and that the electoral process adheres to international standards of free, fair and transparent elections.

What We'll Do With the Money -
Our observers are committed volunteers, and they will be paying much of the costs themselves. They will work in teams of two, in order to ensure that impartial eyes are present at this important vote.

SDAI-AIDD urgently needs funds, as soon as possible, to support the observers on the ground in Ireland. Funds raised will be used to pay for trainings and briefings by in-country experts on the issue, training and briefing materials for the observers, overnight costs for observers, and transportation costs to move about the country as they observe activities in the polling stations.

How Your Donation Helps -
Your support is critical to this mission, and will have an enormous impact on the quality of the observation and its resulting reports to Irish electoral bodies and stakeholderson both sides of the issue.

Your donation will help provide the means to observe throughout the country and to provide in-depth information, delivered by experts on the issue, to prepare our observers in the field to perform their tasks knowledgeably and professionally.

Hello all, This may be the last GoFundMe update for SDAI's Irish Referendum campaign. The Final Report has been published and distributed to stakeholders within the Irish Referendum Office and others, and it's time to close the book. The Final Report is available to all, at our website: sdai-aidd.ca, should you be interested in what we did and what we discovered during our time there. We'd be pleased if you had a look. It's easy reading, and very informative.
We want to thank you again, so very much, for supporting this project.

Our team of observers departed Dublin last week at the end of a very successful joint mission to Ireland's Eighth Amendment Referendum. The mission was both rewarding and exhausting and the team can be proud of a job very well done! A final report will be forthcoming and will be available on the SDAI website once complete. Thanks so much to all who supported us, in so many ways.

Thank you so very much for your generous donations to the Referendum Observation Mission to Ireland (ROM)! We are so excited to see the interest in democracy support, and in this mission!

It is heartwarming to know that people care about issues that don't directly affect them, but are so important to maintaining a civil society worldwide.

The more successful our appeal is, the more we can do to assist and support our observers on the ground.
We are increasing our goal again, in hopes that you will come along with us, and help us meet the challenges that are part of sending a team of people to Ireland, one of the most popular destinations in the world, at this very busy time of year!

Thank you all again, so very much, for your generosity. Look for more updates as we approach and engage in the referendum process in Ireland.

Thank you so much to all the donors who have shown such a generous response to this project! We raised our goal amount today, as we are finding that costs in Ireland, in all areas, are proving to be higher than anticipated. Our observers, already contributing their time and many of the expenses, need your help. Please consider making a donation, or increasing your donation, to support their important role in this historic Irish referendum!
