Internet Safety for Parents

Donation protected
Having spent years as a Deputy Sheriff working cases involve crimes against children, I have developed a passion for kids' safety on the Internet.

Leaving that career to expand on my knowledge of computer and cellphone forensics, ultimately led to a career teaching Law Enforcement officers around the United States how to perform mobile forensics, which has given me the insight and knowledge that most parents don’t have access to.   This has helped me parent my own teenage children while they navigate the online world.

When I am not teaching I volunteer my time to provide free internet safety presentations to kids and their parents.  I often hear the parents say, “I just can’t keep up,” or “I don’t know where to look,” and my response is always the same, “it’s very difficult to keep up with every app, program, friend, follower, or post, but I am fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to keep up, and I will do what I can to help."

They ask what can be done about the problem of internet predators or any other bad influences that our children are being subjected to. The answer is always the same, "You need to educate yourself and your children, as well as communicate honestly and openly with each other."  As a parent myself, I know I don’t get every detail from my teenagers and often when they speak to me, some details are left out because “they know how to handle it.” However, I have seen firsthand the dangers that lurk around the online world, and I have seen kids make minor mistakes, resulting in major trouble. I have also seen how a little dysfunction can take a child and lead them down a path they should not be traveling.

Criminals, predators, and children all access various parts of the web (seen above), and sometimes they unsuspectingly collide, while other times children are preyed upon.  The amount of information available and material they can see is phenomenal and more than any parent alone can comprehend.  I aim to bridge that gap.

Sometimes parents ask if I will look over their kids' phone for them and advise of any dangers or potentially harmful issues. Unfortunately, sometimes after I have spoken with their child, the tips and advice I gave doesn't always get followed. As a result, parents want more, they want to see what is going on, what is deleted, and what is being hidden. I can advise them to manually look through the device, but clarify that with that method there are things they will miss. There are more advanced tools and knowledge that will allow you to dig further than a parent ever thought and will provide a report of that information that can easily be searched.

Companies charge astronomical rates for the extraction and analysis of mobile devices, because the tools and training cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to use, often in excess of $1,500.   I wish to help parents, educate them, and prevent a future tragedy or trauma to their child, without charging them more than a $20 administrative fee. While I have the knowledge to do so, and it is free to all that will listen, I don’t have the software and hardware to go that extra step.

This is where you can help out.  If you care about kid's safety on the internet and helping parents know as much as possible about their kids online activities, then please consider making a donation.  Your donation will allow me to purchase the forensic programs, pay re-licensing fee and purchase updates, and pay for media on which I can provide a report.  Help me reach my goal to buy the software and offer this service to my community, and any others who wish to receive help.  This includes law enforcement agencies in my local area that don't have the necessary tools and resources to help them lock up internet predators who are stalking our children.

The money pledged will help in buying one of the leading top quality tools used to examine mobile devices.  This tool is used by agencies such as the F.B.I., state and local law enforcement agencies, and forensic practitioners around the world, because it is the tool that extracts more data than most any other tool available.  Any extra donations above the pledge will go towards other programs that can supplement and aid in gathering information off of devices. It will also go towards the necessary hardware to facilitate this task. My current career provides me with the training and knowledge I already possess and allows me to continue to build my skills. This venture is not a new job or a second job, it’s a service I wish to provide to those wishing to protect children, but who don’t have the necessary technical knowledge to do so.
