Last night, investigative journalist Lyra McKee was shot dead in a terrorist incident on the streets of Derry. A gunman shot her in the head as she attempted to cover riots on the Creggan area of the city.

I had the pleasure to know Lyra, who was one of the nicest, smartest nad most decent people I have ever met. Lyra was part of a new generation of Northern Irish journalists (and young people) who had moved past sectarian identities and wanted to build a more progressive, more peaceful Northern Ireland. Lyra was a powerful advocate for LGBTi rights, civil liberties and human rights.

Lyra was also an incredible investigative journalist. She was in Forbes 30 Under 30 List, had a growing international reputation and was working on her second book.

I had the pleasure to get to know Lyra through her working on the grassroots campaign to reform the law of libel in Northern Ireland. Lyra was a passionate defender of press freedom and exposing the truth.

You don't expect journalists to be killed anywhere. For it to happen to a friend, in a (troubled) democracy, is just unbelievable. I feel so sad for Lyra's family. She was an incredible person and I will really miss her x

A message from Lyra's sister to everyone who donated:

I wanted to let everyone who kindly donated to Lyra's fund that our family decided to donate £10,000 from the Gofundme to the Centre for Investigative Journalism. This money is to be used to support the Lyra McKee Bursary which allows at least 10 journalists per year to attend their Summer training Conference. The CIJ themselves had secured 3 years' funding and our family wanted to secure the Bursary for a further year to extend Lyra's Legacy. By the end of the securely funded period, 2022, at least 40 journalists will have gained valuable training opportunities, that they would not have ordinarily have had, through the Bursary.

The Lyra McKee Bursary Scheme gives journalists who would have been financially unable to support their attendance at this Summer training an opportunity to get into journalism. Successful recipients were selected from all over the UK & Ireland from a wide range of backgrounds and I had the pleasure of meeting them last week at the CIJ in London along with my husband. You will be able to check this out through getting in touch with the CIJ or looking at their social media.

This is our first donation to secure Lyra's Legacy going forward and we'll be meeting with other potential groups/people in the coming months to see how we can futher secure Lyra's legacy.

The Gofundme was launched to pay for the family's funeral costs and these have all been paid which is a huge relief for the family.

A huge thank you to everyone across the world who donated and make this possible. We are so very grateful. I hope everyone who donated agrees the first use of the fund is just as worthy as our family believes it to be.

Sincerely,

Nichola

Lyra was a freelance member of the National Union of Journalists. NUJ General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet has sent us a message in support of this campaign:

“Lyra’s killing is a shocking tragedy, one that has senselessly cut short the career of a journalist and author who had already achieved so much. Lyra was a proud member of the NUJ’s Belfast and District Branch where she had many friends and colleagues, and was known for her integrity, wit and determination. The NUJ’s thoughts and collective condolences are with her partner Sara, Lyra’s mum and the rest of her family and friends. She will be much missed in the union and the wider industry. We would wholeheartedly encourage donations to this fund as a practical act of solidarity in memory of Lyra, to assist her partner and family at this awful time.”
