I took a volunteering opportunity in Naples, Italy over this summer to work with NGOs in the area that work to help the underprivileged population of locals as well as immigrants seeking asylum from other countries.  I know Italy is not the first place people think of when they think of countries in need, but overlooking the bad places in stereotypically "good" places just drives the discriminatory wedge deeper in the communities here.

I was assigned to work with the children in Italy's most notorious crime neighborhood in Napels; Scampia. Look it up... it's not a nice place. The regular life of the children in Scampia involve taking care of themselves and scavenging for food when their parents get put in jail or are simply too high to take care of their children. It's really quite sad to see the conditions these kids are forced to live in.

However, I had the very good fortune of meeting Sister Edouarda, the founder of an educational daycare right in the middle of the slums of Scampia called Il Giardino dai Mille Colori or The Garden of a Million Colors. She has been in Scampia for about 30 years now trying to provide an oasis for children that live in this rough neighborhood. She has already done very well in completing grants for the remodeling of her organization's daycare and educational center. She has literally created an oasis of beauty and positivity in the middle of this crime ridden desert. Children who go to this daycare not only have the opportunity to thrive in the environment that Sister Edouarda provides but they are able to forget the struggles of everyday life and potentially find a better path for their futures.

But they need to raise money to realize this dream of educating and nurturing children in Scampia to one day escape the slums. The children need school supplies, furniture for classrooms, teaching materials, educational curriculums, salaries to pay educators, playground equipment, etc.

The sooner we reach our fundraising goal, the sooner we can begin getting kids off of the street. Any size donation would go straight to the children of Scampia's education and sustained safety in Il Giardino dai Mille Colori and would make every difference to the children there.
