We are raising this money to provide a summer camp for children in around Southwark in South London.
WHAT PROBLEMS ARE WE TRYING TO SOLVE?
iiChild Camp is a community-based organisation working to provide children and young people in and around the Bells Gardens estate in Peckham with a safe place to play during school holidays. Many of the young people come from low income families and a significant number are afraid of crossing post-code and borough lines. Young people need to meet other young people of different cultures outside the school environment in order to develop social skills and general knowledge and be active citizens. In addition, our holiday Camps give a purpose to their day. It puts the parents’ minds at rest knowing their children are safe and in trusted hands, and are fed each day during the project.
WHY DO WE CARE?
I first became concerned about the welfare and safety of children and young people during the school holidays, when I was a youth worker. They seem to wander about the estates aimlessly and some appeared to be depressed. I often wondered what happened to those on free school meals during the holidays. I decided in 2010 to do something about it and started a Camp in August 2011 for 5 to 19 year-olds. We cannot solve all their problems but having a meal, fun, entrepreneurial and educational activities to engage their mind and build new skills and confidence in a safe environment provides structure to their day. It may also keep some away from gang and knife crime.
HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT?
The money will be used to buy play equipment, for example board games, arts and crafts, and skill-building activities such as T shirt printing, bike repair workshops and tennis shoes printing. We also cover rent, food, the manager, volunteer expenses, paid trips out such as ice-skating, Jungle GYM or trampolining. Shared experiences like a trip to the museum and other paid trips build trust and the opportunity to experience what life is like away from the estates. Any money not used will be put towards the next Camp event.
WHEN WILL THE SUPPORTERS SEE THE DIFFERENCE?
Some noticeable outcomes will be achieved by the end of the week. At our October 2015 half-term Camp we had a new boy with mild autism. Within two days he had settled into our Camp routine and by the end of the week he was socialising with the other children at the Camp. However, other outcomes will take six months to a year; for example diverting their attention and behaviour from anti-social behaviour including gang and knife crime and the negative statistic generated for the wrong reasons. Improvements are often evident by the end of the second week; their behaviour is often calmer, their self-esteem and confidence improves through receiving and earning respect from staff and learning to reciprocate during organised activities.
It is also reflected in the staff time spent with them during lunch periods to help them to relax and reflect, and to think more positively about the future they want to achieve for themselves and their family, and how they will get there. It achieves a positivism in them and shift in focus and attitude. We hereby seek for your generous donations to help us organise a unique Summer Holiday Camp this year, 2018 for these children".
We would appreciate anything that you can donate as it would make these childrens holidays so much better, give them a purpose, something to look forward to and help us support children within a deprived area of London where they are in need of programs like ours!
