IDES Safe Playground Campaign

Donation protected
The Tire Mulch Committee is comprised of a group of concerned IDES parents working together to remove tire mulch from the school's playgrounds. Tire mulch is made from recycled tires that contain carcinogens and chemicals such as arsenic, lead, benzene, cadmium, mercury, and pthalates.

A recent Yale study found 96 chemicals in rubber mulch samples they tested, with 24% of them identified as respiratory irritants. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin or inhaled, and are potentially cancer-causing with daily exposure.
Due to the growing research and health concerns of tire mulch, it has been removed from playgrounds and soccer fields in cities across the country. In addition to potential health risks, the tire mulch shifts easily leaving areas of the playground without adequate padding to protect from impact injuries.

The tire mulch removal process has been completed, but we need your help! Please consider making a donation to help create safe playgrounds for our children at IDES.

* The Asheville City School Board has provide labor from the maintenance department that greatly reduced the cost of the project. Thank you to the Asheville Mulch Yard, Asheville Greenworks, Asheville Playgrounds and Asheville City Schools Facilities and Properties who have all gone the extra mile to make this happen!
