Hi All,

As you know Lori and Kim went on an adventure recently and located the original Hume Family cemetery on Hume Mountain in Madison County, Virginia. This is believed to be the final resting place of Emigrant George Hume and many of his descendants. There are 3 engraved headstones and approximately 34 other graves that are identified with unmarked stones. We have received permission from the property owners to clean up the cemetery, put up a fence (in a style that the property owners are in agreeance with), and place a plaque/marker at the site. We will also be planning a commemoration ceremony after the clean-up project is complete. We hope to have a blessing by one of the rectors of St. Georges Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg where Emigrant George was once a vestryman. We also plan to have a piper(s)play a few tunes from the homeland. All Home/Hume Clan members are invited to attend.  We will post more details as they are available. We may also need a few volunteers for the cleanup. We have estimated the cost of the fence, clean-up, plaques, church, donation, and pipers to be approximately $5,000 and that is our goal for this fundraiser. We hope that you all will pitch in, if you are able, to help us to make sure that the resting place of our beloved ancestors is cared for, protected, and never again forgotten.

If we have any funds leftover from the restoration, we plan to donate them to the Hume Castle Preservation Trust.

We saw quite a few donations come in today! Thank you so very much to you all. We appreciate each of you sooo much!!! Kim has found a less expensive fence in a style that we think the property owners will like btw. I did get a call back from VDHR to get the ball rolling on getting the cemetery registered. She is also sending me some other information on a few different possibilities for further protection of the cemetery. I’m going to have to go do some deed searching in 3 different courthouses because the property has been a part of 3 counties as county lines and names have changed over the years as part of one of these possibilities. Thanks again to all who donated and offered advice and support. This is so encouraging. I spoke with the folks at William and Mary in their archaeology center this morning. While they found it interesting it just isn’t a big enough deal and there isn’t any money for a study. More to come.....
Regards,
Lori

After getting some additional information today, we have increased our goal. The fencing is going to be much more expensive than originally planned. Even with installing it ourselves. As the song goes...We’ve got a long way to go, and a short time to get there.

My husband and I are headed out to Hume Mountain today to go visit the cemetery. We will be taking some measurements to get an estimate for the fence. There is a utility line somewhere that will need to be marked so a call to Miss Utility is on my to do list. We will also be assessing what needs to be done as far as clearing the brush and this horrible vine like ground cover plant that is everywhere. I’m also going to be marking the graves and making a diagram of where they are. I’m not a professional but I have received some guidance from a cemetery preservation group. I will post some pictures later. I spoke with the property owners this morning and they weren’t sure if they would be there or not which is disappointing. The gentleman had marked all of the graves at one time and I was hoping to have his help. This is a big project and I do hope you all will donate to the GO FUND ME so we can get this special place protected. Every little bit counts and you can donate anonymously.
Regards, Lori
