Dwayne's TPLO Knee Surgeries

Tax deductible
Demodex mange survivor and all around great dog, Dwayne, needs double knee surgery. He's an adoptable dog from The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City .

"Hi, my name is Dwayne.  I’m a little over 1 year old, and I’m a Pit Bull/Shar-pei mix.   I was found as a stray by a nice woman on the side of the road near Wyandotte County Lake June 10th.  I had horrible Demodex mange, and looked absolutely pathetic when I first arrived at The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.   I was missing almost ALL of my fur, I was super itchy, (Demodex feels like poison ivy ALL OVER!!), and ‘cause I had been scratching, some of my skin was loose… I was a mess! The staff here started treatment for my Demodex… I had to take some liquid medicine every day and have medicated baths a couple times a week.  Demodex mange isn’t contagious, but it takes a long time to treat… like months sometimes!

When I was almost all finished with my treatment, I got to go to a foster home.  My foster mom is awesome, and gives me lots of toys to chew on (I never chew on stuff I’m not supposed to have, btw)!  Anyway, even though I had a rough start, I didn’t let that get me down… I’m a real laid back kinda dude.  I LOVE humans, I’m affectionate, goofy, sweet, and I’m good with other dogs, cats, and kids!  I’m like the complete package of awesome dog!!

So, after I FINALLY finished my treatment for Demodex and was all healthy… well, then, my back knees started hurting me.  My foster mom brought me to see a HSGKC doggy doctor who said I should see a special doggy doctor for my knees (I think you humans call them “orthopedic surgeons” or something big word like that). After my visit with the doggy specialist, he said my knees are not good, I have tears in the muscles in both of my back knees (for us dogs it’s called bilateral cruciate tears, so for humans it’s like a tear in their ACL… all these huge words!), and I need surgeries on both of them. The surgery is called a TPLO surgery… I’d try to explain that, but it’s a real, real big word!  So, I gotta have these surgeries to live a pain free life! I’m young, and my humans at HSGKC and foster mom want me to be pain free, but they need help.  See, it’s expensive to have these surgeries, like $5,600,  so they’re asking for some help.

TPLO surgeries are very successful, and hold up over time… so I shouldn’t have any knee issues later on in my life.   After I recover from my surgeries, I’ll be able to live a pain free life, and run around and go for walks... I LOVE to go for walks!

If you’d like to make a donation to help with my surgeries, I’d really, really appreciate it, and every little bit helps!

My recovery will take about 6-8 weeks, but I’m ready for a forever home of my own after I’ve had the surgeries. So, if you know anyone who’d like a dog like me (remember, I’m mellow, sweet, good with other dogs, cats, kids, and I’m already house and crate trained), who will hopefully soon be moving around much easier, and without painful knees… keep me in mind!  I’d make a great addition to anyone’s family, just ask my foster mom."

Your friend forever,
Dwayne

I've come a long way since last summer.  After my surgery and recovery I'll be ready for my forever home.
