Medical Mission Trip to Nigeria
Donation protected
Hi everyone,
I am in the final year of the Nursing Program at Chico State and graduating in May. During my first semester, I heard about Kristina Chesterman, who was a nursing student at Chico State in 2013. One night as Kristina was riding her bike home from the library she was killed by a drunk driver. It was known by Kristina’s classmates, family, and friends that she wanted to take her nursing skills abroad to serve in different countries. With the help of her family, friends, teachers, and volunteers a clinic was created in Nigeria to honor Kristina and keep her story alive. The clinic was officially opened last year with Kristina’s father, some of her nursing classmates, and one of Kristina’s instructors in the program who helped make this clinic possible.
The clinic is located in Nigeria and is funded by donations and run by volunteers. There are also full time doctors and nurses that work there year-round, and anyone is able to receive services at the clinic. The clinic has a pharmacy and a surgical suite with costs that are much lower than the government funded hospitals in Nigeria.
Nursing abroad has always been an interest of mine but Kristina’s story hit so close to home that when I heard it I knew this was something I needed to do. I have the opportunity to volunteer at the clinic at the beginning of the New Year with fellow nursing students and other volunteers. While we are there we will help run the clinic, take on patients, do outreach in the surrounding areas, restock the pharmacies, and assist in the community as much as possible.
All of the money I raise will be used to help pay for my flight, the vaccines I need, and housing once I am in Nigeria. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about a passion of mine and in advance for any donation you might make.
I cannot wait for this adventure,
Emmy Hurley
