My name is Jonathan Brett. I am the fourteen year old nephew of Howard G.
In early November of 2014, Uncle Howie was playing basketball with many of his friends, as he did every saturday morning, when suddenly everything changed. He collapsed onto the floor due to a seizure. He was rushed to the hospital and an MRI was taken to test for damage. An astrocytoma (a type of brain tumor) that takes up roughly 1/3 of his total brain tissue was found. The surgeons performed a biopsy to test if it was malignant. The test came back positive.
He later, in about january had a surgery to remove as much of the cancerous tissue as possible without damaging any healthy tissue. The surgeons were only able to remove about 25% of the tumor. He went home two days later. Three days passed and his wife (my aunt Penny) rushed him to the hospital as she believed that he had suffered another seizure. The doctors discovered a severe brain infection and an emergency surgery was performed. In fact, the infection was so bad that the doctors were unable to replace the piece of skull that they had to remove. Therefore, Uncle Howie has been walking around with a concave skull and a brain only protected by skin.
Uncle Howie has had several rounds of radiation and still has a long road to recovery ahead. He has an upcoming surgery in about 3 months to replace the skull that is missing and to clean out any dead tissue that is left over from the infection. After that, he may undergo more surgery or chemotherapy.
As you may expect, this, along with the countless other surgeries that Uncle Howie has undergone and the countless surgeries and treatment to come has left them with many unpaid medical bills. Not to mention that they have two children in college, and one who recently graduated. Uncle Howie was unemployed for 3 months before the first seizure occured and will more than likely never be able to work again and his wife hasn't been able to work due to the fact that she's had and continues to have to take care of him. They even had to sell their house and have been living in my house with my family and I in an effort to conserve money to pay for medical bills. This family truly needs the assistance in order to help pay for the medical bills which arrive in numbers every day. With insurance refusing to cover most of the costs, the surgeries and treatments have been very costly. Each MRI can cost up to $2,500.00 and that's not even close to the amount that each surgery and radiation costs.
