Homeless Women's Lunch *sleep safe* Project
Winter is here.. and an early ski season comes with dropping temperatures... the search for a safe place to sleep for our homeless population continues with extra challenges...
Another homeless woman is murdered... and fear inevitably rises in a population too often homeless as a result of domestic violence.
On any given night, 1 in 200 people are homeless in Australia. The Homeless Women's Lunch Project has been gathering since 2008, providing free, healthy, vegetarian lunches, and support.
Held weekly in Sydney's Inner West, homeless women aged 16 to 72, gather to connect, listen, share and be heard over a healthy meal.
You can read an article about the brilliant work Georgina does here.
Originally attended by 5, now there are 50 regulars and up to 80 women come to share a meal and support. Lunch - which now costs around $200 per week - and group facilitation is provided by 'Creative Womyn Down Under' (CWDU) a voluntary, UNfunded community initiative in need of your help.
Georgina (JD) works with homeless women, and women recently released from prison to help break down barriers, isolation and loneliness.
Winter brings additional challenges: lack of shelter, never so deeply and painfully felt as it is in winter where Sydney temperatures drop to near freezing levels.
CWDU is raising funds for HALL HIRE to provide warm shelter on those nights that are dangerously unbearable- where temperatures drop to near freezing and/or when heavy rain is inescapable..
Hall hire costs are $100 per night... providing food preparation, shower and toileting with much needed warmth and shelter. Up to 60 Women get the opportunity to eat, bathe and sleep in a safe environment. 50 nights for the vulnerable is what we are hoping to raise with your help .
Over the past 11 years, Georgina (JD) has raised funds through pledges (you can PLEDGE to the lunch project Here with a one-off or regular pledge) and fundraising activities... and has raised funds to provide the women with portable swags and warm clothes. What continues to be needed is weekly food and....shelter.
Any contribution, like and share helps.... and is deeply appreciated from $5 towards hall hire to $500 (which will provide 5 nights warmth and shelter for up to 60 women).
Winter is here.... On behalf of homeless women in Sydney's Inner West and beyond... THANK YOU!
