On Friday October 30th as the torrential rains hit Austin and surrounding area, Jere was rescued, along with 4 dogs, by boat from his home of 40+ years….after insisting to the rescuers that he wouldn’t go without his dogs. Meanwhile Jan was separated from him, stranded up at the store and worried sick.
As they spent that night in a local hotel, they didn’t know what they would go back to the following morning. When they returned they found that water had gotten into their house at least a foot or more and their 2 cars that were parked on the property were almost completely submerged, all are totaled.
At 70+ years old, one would never think that they would be faced with the devastation and sadness of losing your home and being forced to start over. They had been wanting to relocate but this is not the way they wanted to go about doing it.
To know them is to love them and if you know them you know that they would give you the shirt off their back. But if you know them well, you also know that they have a hard time asking for help and an even harder time accepting it.
My name is Linda Garner, I live in Austin, Texas about 15 miles from where Jan and Jere live. I have known them for over 30 years and consider them my adopted parents. They are now the adopted grandparents to my 4 year old son.
They are loved parents, grandparents and friends to many people.
They have had numerous offers for help, so for all of you offering, and wanting to help, this is how. Please give what you can to help them start over and purchase land and/or a new house. Thanks in advance for your generosity!
