Help the Lunenburg Art Gallery

The Lunenburg Art Gallery is a non-profit organization which has been a prominent feature in the Lunenburg County area art scene for more than 40 years.   In 2015 we had 145 artist and non-artist members, based locally in  Nova Scotia and beyond.

The L.A.G.  rents space in a building which is divided into two galleries on the corner of Duke and Pelham Street in Lunenburg,  a UNESCO World Heritage  Site   in Nova Scotia, Canada.

We   manage our operating costs by fundraising and sales of art.  This year we have been left with  a significant budget shortfall  due to a regular sponsor not being able to contribute and we need the help of the artist  and art-lovers community to  make  it up or we're in danger of having to close our physical location.

The gallery is   open from March to the end of October, during which time we showcase both member and invited guest artists. The gallery has one paid employee who manages the overall running of the gallery. Volunteer members run the committees and fundraising. We have to pay rent for the full year, but can not employ a gallery attendent  for the winter months as sales would be too slow.

A most important aspect of our gallery is our commitment to art for children. Our year always starts with the Lunenburg and County School Art Exhibition.  The two workshops for children which are held with Paint Sea on Site are extremely popular and this brings in families and youngsters from around the province.

Lunenburg Art Gallery draws artists and visitors to our town and the county with both on-going and changing exhibitions and major events. The latter brings 70 - 80 artists and their families from Nova Scotia,  the  other Canadian provinces as well as  the United States  who participate in a two day outdoor painting spree in prime tourist time. This has a positive impact on accommodations, restaurants and other visitor facilities in the town and county.

The gallery also runs artist workshops throughout the year. This does not bring in much in the way of funds but is a valuable contribution to the community.

Each year the L.A.G. supports our Nova Scotia College of Art and Design  graduate students by giving them a free membership for the year which gives them an opportunity to show their work to a wider audience. In the last ten years Lunenburg County N.S.C.A.D students have been given at least three shows for a full month, in the gallery.

The board and members of the Lunenburg Art Gallery feel that for the last 40 years we have given much to Lunenburg County and the greater art community of Canada and the world.  We ask that you seriously consider giving whatever you can  spare for this important  cultural hub  so that we can continue on our mission long into the future.

I'm wondering if you have thought about putting together a fundraiser by asking artists to donate a piece for an auction? I would be pleased to donate a painting. I know that's a lot of work to put together, but if you decide to do so, please keep me in mind!
