If you don't know me, my name is Tiffany and I'm from San Diego and have adopted a few Syrian refugee families through the Heart4Refugees non-profit organization in San Diego.
When the refugees came to the US, the government gave them a stipend of approximately $11,000 to help fund the rent on their new home, money for food until their monthly assistance was finalized, clothing and home furnishing needs, etc.
Because they came here with no job, no credit, no savings and no proof of any income whatsoever, almost $6000 of that stipend went directly to their landlord to secure a 2 bedroom apartment that the family of 11 lives in currently. The other $5,000 helped to buy furniture, food, bikes for transport to school for their older children, a phone for the father, miscellaneous necessities like household products (toiletries, cleaning supplies, diapers) etc. With almost nothing left of the money they initially received and no form of transport, their financial situation is quite dire.
They are currently using bicycles as their primary form of transport to the grocery store, school, etc. You can only imagine how challenging this has been for these families searching for work.
The most powerful (and primary) way this money will be used is in the purchase of used vehicles for the families so that they can get to and from a job to be able to sustain support for their families.
Their secondary need is a used laptop computer(s) for their family to be able to learn the English language on. They are more than willing to go to the classes (and the father has been going to a local English class), but we could see how much value this would have for them, as they find it difficult to communicate with Americans in any way without the presence of a translator.
I cannot say to you what it would mean to be able to help these families find a car, so that they can find a job (and his dignity again) to provide for their sweet families. Literally ANYthing you can give - no matter how small, will be received as if it were the entire amount. You have no idea how grateful they (or I) will be for your help.
