Help 3 year old River with Medical Expenses due to liver failure!
My son River was born 8 weeks premature. In the rush to stabilize him after birth, there were all kinds of nurses there. One of the student nurses had accidentally poked herself & my son, so immediately she had to be tested for any blood born diseases, as did my child. The results were devastating, as it was revealed that she was Hepatitis C positive. We had to wait 9 months to get River tested, & he was positive. As a mother of a newborn baby, this hateful disease is something you don't even consider your child being exposed to. The hospital is fighting a settlement, stating that since she was just a student nurse, not technically a regular employee, they're not liable. He contracted the most aggressive geniotype, 1B, & isn't eligible for any treatments at his age, he's just turned 3. His liver enzymes are sky high, he has tons of swelling, and his liver is beginning the cirrhosis stage & failing. The only option we have left is a transplant, & the waiting list is extremely long. He was placed on the donor registry at the end of July. We have to travel 3 hours each way to his specialist at Monroe-Carroll Children's Hospital several times a week, normally 3 times per week at the very least, which is extremely expensive on top of all the medical expenses his insurance doesn't cover. He will die without a liver transplant, & when ppl hear his diagnosis they look at him with disgust, because ppl associate his disease with drug addicts & ppl who live a high risk lifestyle. The only risk my son took was fighting to survive at birth & accidentally being poked with a tainted needle, his disease has progressed so drastically that he won't make it till the age where he can begin treatment, & he's gained 42 lbs of swelling from his liver, which has caused him respiratory distress, not too mention strain on his other organs & heart. He is such a blessing to all those around, & while it hurt my pride to have to set up a GoFundMe page, my pride pales in comparison to my sons life. I had to leave my regular job just to take care of him, & my photography business barely brings in enough to pay the regular bills, especially with other children to support. My husband's wages are all we have to live on, & between regular bills on top of his medical and travel expenses, there's just not enough for both. Our car won't be able to make many more of his hospital trips, it's almost 14 years old & not actually too safe to travel in. Its a manual and it jumps out of gears while driving, we can't afford to get it fixed or get another vehicle. This sweet little boy is the light of my life. It doesn't matter how bad he's feeling, he worries about others feelings. I just want to make sure I can afford the expenses this disease has caused us to incur. Finances were already tight, and now we are drowning in debt. I want to be able to provide for my children & will do anything possible to make sure my lil Riverboat has the very best medical treatments and specialists. Everyone says, aww he's so cute & chubby, well he's not chubby, it's fluid built up. Just because someone looks cute on the outside doesn't mean that something isn't wrong on the inside. I wish he was a healthy, normal child & didn't have to go thru everything he's going thru, but he does. He's the bravest person I've ever met.
