Hello (or should I say xin chào!) to all my friends, family, and everyone reading this!
My name is Vivian Tran and I am a freshman at UC Berkeley. I am an intended Molecular Cell Biology major pursuing a career in anesthesiology! I joined Volunteers for Medical Outreach (VMO) at UC Berkeley to gain more medical insight and first-hand experience in patient care. VMO is a student-run, non-profit organization with a mission to provide free medical services and resources to rural, impoverished areas in Vietnam.
Throughout the year, VMO fundraises for free Hepatitis B vaccinations, corrective surgeries, mobile clinics, and general health lessons to underserved Vietnamese populations. Our fundraising is used to pay for these medical services to ensure that disadvantaged Vietnamese populations are not financially restricted from obtaining healthcare and medical resources. All of these donations will be going towards paying for all of these free medical services, transportation to the locations, housing, and much more. This summer, I along with a handful of other amazing and dedicated students, will be going to impoverished areas in Sài Gòn and Huế that lack access to medical resources to volunteer and provide aid alongside doctors, dentists, and pharmacists.
Volunteers for Medical Outreach partners with various non-profit organizations such as Aid for Children Without Parents (ACWP), Friends of Hue Foundation (FHF), and Vietnam Tooth Project (VTP). These organizations employ many medical professionals and Vietnamese officials to come to disadvantaged areas in Vietnam with us in the summer to provide free medical services and clinics.
Being both Vietnamese-American and pursuing a career in the medical field, going to Vietnam alongside doctors to provide medical relief to impoverished areas means the world to me. I strongly believe that no one should be denied medical help or medical resources regardless of their background, income, or social standing. Access to medicine is a human right, not a privilege!
