Medibank is working with TaskForce to raise funds and deliver enhanced capability for their award winning Breaking the Barriers program. This program helps mothers and their children affected by drug, alcohol and domestic violence issues.

To help raise awareness and much needed funds, one of the team members working on this project is literally putting his body on the line.

Meet Dave

Dave has a beard.
It’s a well-known beard, but with an even better story. If you’ll indulge me for a few minutes, I’ll share with you the tale of Dave’s beard. Then let you know how you can help to support a brighter future for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

The year was 1984 (apparently) and it was a quiet night in the local hospital. Doctors and nurses went about their business with no idea they would soon bear witness to an event that would change their lives forever. For that night, a baby boy named Dave was born. And Dave was born - with a beard.

His beard bought with it unbridled confidence and gifted him awesome power. At age 12, Dave invented the mug, addressing man’s age old problem of consuming hot liquids without burning their hands. At 15 he invented soft closing drawers for Ikea. There was nothing Dave couldn’t do. He was solving the world’s problems and it seemed nothing could stand in his way. But things would soon take a turn for the worse.

One fateful day in 2003, buoyed by the confidence of his own achievements and taking his great gift for granted, Dave inadvertently shaved off his precious beard. No one is sure exactly what drove Dave to such reckless judgement; perhaps he wanted to test whether his beard truly was the source of his powers; perhaps it got itchy; perhaps he was hungover celebrating life’s successes when shaving one morning. The world may never know, but the world suffered for years to come.

Dave was devastated. The world’s problems were banking up and he felt responsible for all of them. Global warming, famine, people leaving things in their pockets when they wash their clothes. He knew there were answers but he could no longer find them.

Dave made the decision to grow his beard back as quickly as possible. He stopped shaving in the hope that once his beard was back to its former glory, he could once again harness it’s power helping mankind. But it didn’t work. As his beard grew, solutions he so desperately desired didn’t come.

One day, after around 30 millimetres of growth, Dave noticed something unusual. He found that he began to understand, and even love, spreadsheets. They held no interest for him before but now, when he saw a pivot table or an ‘If’ statement, his eyes grew with excitement and Joy. He began tinkering with formulas and found that he had an ability way beyond the regular folk of the town. He was churning out V Lookups and SQL queries like a man possessed. He could create buttons, change cell colours and his use of graphs was off the charts. Time magazine once described it as the 8th Wonder of the World.

Dave decided to use his new found powers for the good of the land, so he did the only logical thing and began a career in finance. To this day, Dave still impresses with his skills and is revered amongst the excel community. Not wanting to risk losing his powers again, Dave hasn’t taken a razor to his face for 15 years. Back in a time when an elected Prime Minister stayed Prime Minister, Nemo hadn’t been found and 50 Cent first asked 21 questions.

But that’s all about to change. In order to help support the amazing work done by TaskForce through their Breaking the Barriers program which aims to helps mothers and their children affected by drug, alcohol and domestic violence issues, Dave has agreed to once again remove his beloved beard. Risking his career, his dignity and desertion of friends, Dave has made this selfless commitment in order to help raise funds for the program and he needs your help.   The beard, as it is fondly known, will depart, on November 22nd at 11am.

If you’ve always wondered what Dave’s bare face looks like, please sponsor generously and help to support this fantastic organisation. More information on TaskForce and Breaking the Barriers can be found here
