Help Thomas from the Netherlands

Thomas is a 21 year old exchange student from the Netherlands who came here to study history and journalism at SDSU for a semester.
Less than 24 hours after arriving, Thomas was robbed at 3 pm in the afternoon while exploring his new neighborhood on foot.
As he walked on the temporary sidewalk across from the Vons on 30th Street in North Park in broad daylight, he was approached and given a choice—to hand over his phone or get hurt. He somehow convinced the guy to let him keep his only tie to home and take cash instead—$60 was the cost to protect himself (a lot to a student!).
As his host mom, I am horrified and embarrassed by what happened. While the police are investigating this crime, I am doing what I can to help Thomas feel comfortable and safe. I am very much hoping the community can rally behind him and outshadow the "bad guy."
