The photo is some of our group who went to North Platte to receive the 2012 Outstanding Group of the Year award from the Governor's wife Sally Ganem.
OmahaWorks Volunteers comprises people from what used to be the Heartland Council of Pioneers. In 2002 Lucent Technolgies discontinued subsidizing our activities and we became self supporting. Our bylaws stated that because the majority of members were older and/or retired we were not allowed to charge dues. Since we no longer had a presence at the Lucent location we were no longer allowed to recruit from the employee base, When the Pioneers headquarters started to deplete our savings account we regrouped and became the Omahaworks Volunteers Chapter under Jacob House a 501(c)3 charity.
In 2012 we still painted Playground Maps, supported Salvation Army activities such as Bell Ringing, Adopt-a-Family, and Turkeyfest where we assembled over 1500 dinners, Hooks and Needles who continue to provide
hand-crafted items throughout the Metro are, Hug-a-Bears who have just completed their 38,000 bears distributed to children that have just experienced some misfortune. Hooks and Needles products go to entities such as hospitals, Nebraska Humane Society etc. throughout the Metropolitan area. Hug-a-Bears are provided to Project Harmony, Boystown Behavioral, Douglas County Sheriff, Bergan Mercy and Children's Hospitals, Fire Dept. 43, and 44, Madonna House, Omaha Police and others
This current group includes only volunteers, some of whom are cancer survivors. Attrition is a problem as is our bank account which continues to shrink. Without additional funds it is likely that these activities will end in approximately one year. An additional $10,000 should allow us to cotinue for at least two more. All of the funds will be used to purchase supplies, that have become more costly in the recent past.
Please help us continue our good works.
