Help Rowan Punch Cancer in the Face!
My name is Tammi, I play several roles in life including mother, sister, daughter, friend and social worker. One of my favorite roles is being an Aunt and I have been blessed with several wonderful, smart and courageous nieces and nephews.  Today I come to you with an urgent request.   My niece Rowan is battling stage 4 bone cancer and needs our help and support.

Rowan is a wonderful niece and person. *They are kind and generous and socially  conscious,  always willing to help out another and always willing to speak up for what is right.  They are a role  model for their family, are engaged in their community as an educator, activist and blogger.  They are a first generation college student studying social sciences and they advocate for those oppressed by power inequities.  Their  work has focused on supporting sexual assault victims and on social justice, power inequities, racism  and equality.  They also  dedicate time to learning and teaching about gender issues and activist parenting.

Rowan was first diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma when they were 23 years old.  Rowan went through chemotherapy and radiation treatment and was in remission for several years.  During that time they returned to school and work and found their life partner. They  gave birth to two beautiful, healthy babies, after being told they could never conceive due to the chemotherapy treatments; they enjoy proving the medical profession wrong.

In late 2017 we got the heartbreaking news that the cancer had returned.  Chemotherapy was again suggested but it was made clear that it could not abate the cancer and might add a few months to their life, however it would make them severely ill and during treatment they could expect a low quality of life.  Rowan, now 33, has decided to use less invasive and natural remedies this go round and is fighting a good fight. Above all they want to be there for their children and focus on quality of life.  In August of 2018, their oncologist informed them that a large mass in their lung is a cancerous tumor and told them they had weeks to months left.  Rowan has consistently proven their doctors wrong and continues to do so.

Fighting cancer is a full time job but not at all lucrative. Rowan has been unable to work for a paycheck since August.  In early February, Rowan started using  Hospice services for pain control but continues to live a high quality, active life with their family. Their partner is needed at home and is unable to work now either – he is dedicated to being at home to assist Rowan and to be the primary care giver for their two young children, two and four years old.

*They/them are Rowan’s preferred pronouns.

PS: Rowan is what my niece Jessica Mason goes by now but their legal name is still Jessica Mason.

100% of the funds raised from this campaign will go towards non-traditional cancer treatments, fees associated with Rowans medical care, housing costs and living expenses for this young family.
