Ed & Fay Hnetka - Flood Relief Fund

Drumheller couple, Ed & Fay Hnetka's world was turned up-side-down when their home flooded on April 23, 2018. Because the damage was created by overland flooding, it is considered an Act of God and not covered by insurance. The damage is unfathomable, leaving the Hnetkas' with no choice but to demolish their home of 29 years.

It's been a wild week for Ed and Fay Hnetka, who live in Dunphy, near where Highway 575 goes up the hill to Carbon. They and their neighbors were surprised when Kneehills Creek topped its banks with snow melt and headed overland.
"We woke up Monday morning and it was just about three quarters of the way to the house," recalled Fay. "Monday night it came in full force, the water started coming into our house about 7:00 on Tuesday morning and by 3:00 the basement was full."
Over a metre of water poured into the Hnetkas' basement, and Ed said that wasn't all.
"We had a good foot of water in the garage and it just kept coming," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "There was nothing we could do; sandbags wouldn't help us."
Fortunately, the water level in the creek has started to fall and they can get to work cleaning up the mess.
"We went to bed about 2:00; we got up and the basement (water) had gone down about a foot," noted Ed. Fay said it's now a case of pumping the leftover water out.
"Then we're looking at getting some big dryers in an on and on."
The Hnetkas' have lived on their property for 29 years and say they've never seen anything like it.

Fay has sold Avon in the area for over 20 years, they are both very well-known and liked in the community. We are hoping to raise funds to help the retired couple with the cost of repairs/demolishing their home and to re-build their life elsewhere.
