Rajendra 'Raj' Chhetri, a Nepalese citizen, has lived in the UK with 'indefinite leave to remain' for nearly fifty years. But a change in Nepalese law now means he is in danger of becoming stateless. (He would have to return to Nepal to renew his passport, but health considerations prevent him from doing that.)

Therefore he needs to apply for British citizenship. But with only a modest NHS pension to rely on, a sum of money that many of us could comfortably afford is not so easy for him.

Raj has served the community in so many ways:

* He was a mental health nurse in the NHS for 44 years.
* Even in retirement, he uses his knowledge of mental health issues to help dementia sufferers and their families through the work of Alzheimer's Cafés in Camberley and Farnborough.
* He advises churches and community groups on the safeguarding of vulnerable adults.
* He has campaigned tirelessly for the rights of Gurkha soldiers.
* He advises the police and civic authorities on community issues.
* A Christian convert from Hinduism, he works for good relationships between different faiths.

This isn't a man who should be worrying about where he will live the final years of his life - this is a man who probably deserves an honour from the Queen!

So - can you help? We need to raise £1200 for Raj to make the citizenship application, £50 for him to sit the 'Life In The UK' test, and £80 for the citizenship ceremony - a total of £1330.

Perhaps you're a friend of Raj. Maybe you worked with him. You might know him through a church or community group. Like me, you may well have benefitted from his advice and support. Between us, I'm sure we can raise this money!

Please donate. And please share this campaign.

EDIT 25th April 2019: I now know that Raj does not need to sit the 'Life In The UK' test due to his age, and so I have reduced the target for this campaign.

Well, since we have now comfortably exceeded the fundraising goal (and a further £100 came in separately by cheque) it seems only right to close the campaign to further donations.

Procedures are being put in place so that only Raj can withdraw the money raised. None of it will - in the words of Father Ted - be 'resting in my bank account'. Everything will go directly to Raj.

Thank you once more to everyone for your wonderful generosity.

Well, this is crazy and wonderful: we are now more than £400 above the basic target. This provides a generous contingency for Raj. Thank you again to everyone.

In other news, BBC Surrey has recorded a radio interview with Raj. The likelihood is that it will go out on Monday at 7:05 am, but of course, these things can be 'bumped' when a major story comes along. I may also be interviewed for their Sunday religious show.

Finally, the interview with Ellie Fleming that appeared online last Monday is now in print. It features on page 10 of this week's Woking Advertiser, and in other local editions of the Surrey Advertiser.

Great news! We passed the fundraising target tonight! Thank you again, everyone!

Thanks also to Ellie Fleming of the Woking Advertiser for this piece in her paper: https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/woking-resident-46-years-could-16233714?fbclid=IwAR0706Ak5nJNrEa7PlVVC7ZRnQvDuXhSjP-D-3UKuOqyU7pCaaRodaLk4sU
