Hi, I'm Jason von Nieda, and I'm the founder of the OpenPnP project.
OpenPnP is an Open Source SMT pick and place system that includes ready to run software, and hardware designs that you can build and modify. You can use OpenPnP software to run a pick and place machine of your own design, or with existing commercial machines, giving them abilities they never had with their OEM software
I'm raising funds in order to buy a CharmHigh CHMT36VA pick and place machine to use as a development platform. With this machine I hope to develop a fully functional driver so that OpenPnP can run it, and to find ways to improve OpenPnP for running production jobs.
Once I receive the machine, I intend to:
1. Create an OpenPnP driver so OpenPnP can control all functions of the CHMT36VA out of the box.
2. Make improvements to OpenPnP to make it easier to use for production jobs, while maintaining the things that make it great for DIY and hobby.
3. Release all my modifications, notes, software, and changes as Open Source through http://openpnp.org so that everyone else can benefit from the work!
My inspiration for choosing this particular machine is SparkFun's decision to purchase one for their prototyping needs . They have been using it since last Winter and it sounds like it has been a positive improvement in their workflow. In addition, the machine is very affordable, and has all the basic features such as dual vision, vacuum sensing, mechanical feeding, and PCB handling.
My hope is that this machine plus OpenPnP software will make a good platform for hobbyists, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and prototypers to get started with a desktop pick and place.
I'm raising $2000, which is a little more than half the cost of the machine after shipping. I'll pay for the rest myself to assure you I'm fully committed to making this work.
I expect driver development to take less than a month after the machine arrives, and after it's finished and released I'll start working on improvements to OpenPnP's workflow. Those improvements will be released as they are finished, as all new features in OpenPnP are currently.
