Help Indonesian Earthquake Victims

Many of you may have heard about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake and tragic events that have unfolded in Indonesia over the past week.

As you may know Charlie and I were caught up in the earthquake which hit our island hard where we were undertaking our dive master internship. It was the most terrifying few nights of our lives as we suffered aftershocks, panic, tsunami warnings and a desperate evacuation process as Charlotte had foot injuries.

Now safe in Kuala Lumpur we are doing all we can via our social media to fundraise for our friends who have been left with nothing after the devastation of the earthquake left 200,000 homeless, over 300 dead and thousands more injured.

Lombok has been our second home for much of the last three years and we are devastated for our friends who have taken us in like family on every visit there and treated us like one of their own. Now we can do something for them. We were lucky to escape alive and also lucky enough to be born into a western country with the opportunity of fleeing the region. Our friends were not and we are in contact with them everyday to offer support and funding to our dive teams on the ground who are directly delivering water, food and medical supplies in the first instance!

For every £5 donated, you will have one entry into our Instagram giveaway (e.g. £20 = 4 entries) where we have teamed up with our favourite resorts and brands to give away hotel stays, vouchers, swimwear and apparel to donors.

All proceeds will go directly to our teams on the ground in Gili Trawangan and Lombok who we are in contact with regularly via phone and email. 70 % of Gili Trawangans workforce reside in the worst affected area, North Lombok, the income of which the families rely solely upon. Working at a dive center (who employ a significant number of local staff) at the time of the earthquake, 50% of funds will be directed via bank transfer to our Dive Center Manager on Gili Trawangan, Steve Willard ([email redacted]) who will use the money to coordinate the distribution of food, water treatment devices, medical supplies and funds for the rebuilding of homes of the staff members. 50% of the funding will also be directed to Ahmad Hambali ([email redacted]) who operates a mountain trekking company in North Lombok which employs a team of Lombok residents who have lost their homes also. He will oversee the equal distribution of funds to his team for supplies and building materials.

We are slowly trying to make sense of all of this, but if there is one thing we do know, it is that the community spirit of the locals and the dive industry in Gili is stronger than any earthquake could steal away from them.
