Hi everyone! Sammy Rickey here :). My bestie Chelsea and I decided that we wanted to try to help the Amazon rainforest in any way we can! Just like Robert Swan said, "The biggest threat to our planet is believing that someone else will save it." So, we decided to do something that allows other people to help a little as well! Many of us have recently learned about the tragic fire that has been taking place in Amazon rainforest for the past 3 weeks.
While it is the responsibility of the government to reduce and fight these fires, they have policies, such as reducing forest protection and encouraging agribusiness expansion, which have contributed to these fires that are expanding and not being controlled. This arson is committed to help clear land and expand cattle ranches into the rainforest. The unprecedented rate at which these fires are burning is due to rises in temperature and dryness fueled by climate change.
One of the best ways we can help fight these fires is by supporting organizations that work directly with indigenous communities who are on the front lines trying to stop future destruction.
Amazon Watch is an amazing non-profit organization that helps protect the Amazon rainforest by supporting indigenous peoples and has been doing so since 1996. They work alongside other indigenous and environmental organizations in the Amazon to fight against forest destruction and the harmful policies and practices that contribute to it.
