Help Erika & Miriam Start a Family

Hello friends, family, and strangers-

When we were 33 years old we went to see our first fertility specialist. One of the requirements was to talk to a therapist to make sure we were "sure". When she asked us why now, I mentioned that we were 33 and time was ticking. She responded that we were young and I felt relief.

Five years later, countless IUIs, one miscarriage and too many injections to remember we're still trying to have a baby.

Because of some physiological complications (fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts and blocked fallopian tubes), it's looking more and more likely that in order to get and stay pregnant we'll have to turn to IVF and at this point, we frankly can't afford to do it alone.

So, we're turning to our friends and family and loved ones and friends of friends to help us on this long and twisted journey to parenthood.

A bit about us. We have been together for 9 years and married for 2. We live in the Pacific Northwest with an adorable and spoiled dog, two equally spoiled cats and 6 chickens.  We are both professionals with jobs (yay!) and dwindling savings (boo!). We are both Jewish and can't wait to have a big Jewish family.

Some folks have said, I believe out of kindness, that we should just adopt. And while I believe this is meant out of love, I want to address right off the bat that we both passionately want to carry and birth children. We have every intention to foster children in the future.

We are collecting funds to help pay for IVF treatment; fertility drugs, egg retrieval transfer of embryos, all of which we will have to pay out of pocket. We are not asking for money to pay for donor sperm.

Making this ask has been hard, to say the least. For the most part, our infertility journey has been a private one. We've shared with close friends or anyone who will listen, but opening up and being vulnerable in this way feels pretty tender. Any amount you can donate helps. Any kind words mean the world. Any bit of sharing of our story helps us realize our dream.

Thank you,
E&M

Happy New Year's Eve friends, family and strangers!

2017 was not the year I hoped it would be in terms of us starting a family. I was really (really) hoping for a Hanukkah miracle pregnancy and to say that we're disappointed is a bit of an understatement.

And still, we are so fortunate and have so many things to be grateful for. Since we're here, we're incredibly grateful to the 2010 folks who have visited this campaign. We're grateful to the 241 Facebook shares on this campaign. And we're grateful to the 63 people who have donated to our campaign. Some of you we've never even met and that truly makes us feel humbled, happy and hopeful.

As planned, I'm starting the process for fibroid removal surgery. The surgery will most likely be scheduled the second week of February (I was hoping for January but with the last IUI try, we didn't get the ball rolling as far as pre-op requirements).

We have an appointment with our RE to start talking about IVF planning for us both; who should do the retrieval, etc., costs/benefits of "mini" IVF over full IVF and looking into traveling to Europe for the procedure. We've also started the application processes for a Jewish-based grant for families looking for help with IVF. It's a LOT of paperwork, but we're excited for the extra help there. So, a lot to figure out going into 2018.

With that all being said, we really want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love, kind words, support, hugs, prayers, good vibes, etc. It's been amazing to have you in our lives in this way.

Happy New Year,

Erika and Miriam

So, we're not pregnant.

I took two pregnancy tests over the last week that were negative and today I started my period. Per usual when this happens, I'm quite weepy and spending time in bed.

Tomorrow I'll pull myself up by my bootstraps, but today I'm laying low.

Y'all!!!

We're less than $300 away from $3000!!!

WHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT??? Thanks to everyone who keeps sharing and donating and sending us messages of support and love.

We are officially in the dreaded TWW (two week wait) just waiting to see if the last IUI of my life results in a BFP (big fat positive) or a BFN (big fat negative). TTC acronyms are out of control, just sayin'.

During the TWW I try not to think about it, though as most folks who are TTC will attest to, EVERYTHING is a pregnancy symptom. I just had the craziest pinch on my left side as I was logging in and thought, "is that implantation pain?"

My boobs will feel sore and I'll be like, is that because I'm pregnant? I'll feel weepy and wonder, am I pregnant? The smell of something will turn my stomach and I wonder, AM I PREGNANT!?

Everything is up for debate. And the hard part is that early pregnancy signs are strikingly similar to PMS signs. So, taking it all in stride. Not trying to think about it too much. And, well, waiting.
