Help Doug, a Disabled Veteran, Hero, Humanitarian

Helping Doug, a Disabled Veteran, Hero, & Dedicated Humanitarian.

We ask you consider helping someone who always puts others first.  Doug needs a decent place to live.

For 18 years Doug has put his life on the line for our country in Special Forces. He was shot in the neck while carrying a wounded soldier to safety. He returned to duty after recovery. On another mission he was shot through the side, and he again returned to active duty. Then during Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan he was shot twice in the hip while on a special ops mission to rescue soldiers surrounded by ISIS fighters, even though he was wounded he was able pull other soldiers to safety. But these wounds ended his career. During his service Doug was awarded 3 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars and 2 Silver Stars for his heroic life saving actions. Now at the age of 59 he wakes each day legally deaf, riddled with severe arthritis, 2 artificial hip joints, one that still has a bullet to close to a nerve to remove, un-repairable shoulder damage, and in a constant battle with severe PTSD.

After countless missions over decades and seeing things that would haunt civilians for a lifetime Doug never complains, has no substance abuse problems, and is reluctant to even share what he has been through, or what he is going through now. In fact Doug is only focused on helping other Disabled Veterans, Homeless and the needy. Every Tuesday in connection with the Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank he runs the distribution of food to 120 families. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday he delivers food to over 100 families who are part of a Veteran’s Ministry. He also helps to organize Free Dental Clinics that served over 278 homeless and needy families last year. Doug also teaches self-defense and survival skills to local Pathfinders and Girl Scouts.

We share all of this with you because Doug is now the one in need, but he would never ask for himself.

Doug needs a decent place to live. Currently, he lives in the only place he could afford. An 18-foot trailer, 14 years old, that is in a condition which is contributing to ongoing health problems. No hot water, leaking plumbing, which is causing mold, no heating. Doug has struggled to keep his electricity, gas and cell phone on with the small amount he gets from the VA.

Unfortunately, Doug has fallen victim to the many problems within the (VA) Veterans Administration. Doug was trained to be a warrior, not a bureaucrat. As result of not having an advocate, he fell through the cracks of the VA for years, denied proper care, denied disability, denied medication and counselling he badly needed. Having to borrow money for gas to drive to appointments only to find after arriving that they were canceled and to come back in 3 weeks.

Due to a large backlog, after a little more than a year, the VA started reviewing his case, they found he should have been given 100% disability years earlier. Hopefully, there will be a resolution. For now he has no money, little ability to work and earn but he has his Pride, Honor, Faith and a dedication to serving others.

We are a small group of friends who want to let him know his years of service, sacrifices and humanitarian efforts are appreciated. The goal is to gather enough donations to get Doug a better trailer and to help him find a place in a community where he can have water and power and friends.

Doug is a proud veteran and it will be hard for him to see this Go-Fund-Me page, and even harder for him to accept help, but we can’t let him live like this after all he has done for our country and community.

Doug deserves to live with dignity.

Any amount you can offer will be a blessing and greatly appreciated.
If you know of someone or a business that would be willing to sponsor or assist in the donation of a trailer, RV or 5th-wheel  . . . that would be amazing.

As an active duty service member, Doug was out of the country or on a base most of his military career, he didn’t develop a lot of contacts who can help.  Please share the link to Doug’s story with friends. You never know who it might reach. Thank you for reading about our wonderful friend.
We hope you can make a donation and will keep him in your prayers.
PS: 100% of your donation goes directly to Doug for purchasing a new place to live.
