Earlier this year I had the privilege to be in a production put on by the Orange Community Players. It was my first time back in theatre in quite some time. I enjoyed myself and the experience as a whole so much that by the end of the show I was asked, and subsequently voted in, to fill a vacancy on their board of directors.
I love the theatre, and I feel honored by this responsibility--but enough about me. I need to talk to you about this theatre.
The 2017-2018 season happens to be the Orange Community Players 60th anniversary. As a board, we are humbled by this achievement and feel the mantel of responsibility and purpose as we seek to continue the legacy for another 60 years…and then some!
Recent rainfalls have revealed some very real and expensive issues with our playhouse that MUST be addressed, not the least of which is significant damage to the roof. Unfortunately, the needed repairs are extremely costly and beyond the scope of our seasonal budget.
I have a dream for this theatre (not a Martin Luther King, Jr. type dream, mind you, but you have to admit that 60 years is a long time). Some features of the theatre have become outdated and worn. Updating the lobby, seating, sound system, and lighting systems are only a few of the ideas I entertain that would truly enhance the experience of our community patrons. Before we can attempt those, we first have to address the necessities of roof repairs, pest prevention, and flooring and foundation repairs.
For the love of Fine Arts, and for the love of Theatre, I appeal to you at this time and ask that we come together as a community to preserve this historical asset in our area. Please donate anything that you can. We hope to be around for many more years to come.
