I am an 8th grade student in Los Angeles. Through school, I have the privilege of participating in a community engagement program. My classmates and I get involved with other kids in our city whose lives are not as comfortable as our own. We experience the reward of giving to others less fortunate than us. We regularly visit an elementary school where we tutor our 2nd grade buddies in one-on-one learning.
Recently, when we visited my buddy's school, she was absent. My teacher and I learned that my buddy was not at school because her family is homeless. My buddy, her parents and two sisters didn't have a safe place to sleep that night. I was so shocked and sad. I want to directly help and I believe the most meaningful contribution I can make is in helping her family to find housing they can afford so they can make and keep a home.
Together with my teacher, I have made a plan to improve my buddy's family's chances of a sustainable housing solution. Our efforts won't solve all the challenges that cause homelessness, but for my buddy and her family, I believe that we can make a huge difference in their lives.
My buddy's parents have jobs and have found an apartment to rent. With their savings and my teacher's gift, they can manage to move into the apartment in the next few days. However, they don't have any basic furniture or necessities. My goal is to give them enough money to continue paying their rent until they can rebuild their savings to afford to make a stable home. I also want to provide the basics like beds, bedding, towels and kitchen supplies.
