THE STORY OF BARBUDA
Since September 2017, when Hurricane Irma hit Barbuda destroying upwards of 90% of the buildings on the island, little to no media coverage was given to the issue.
Eight months later, the island is still left without electricity and running water. The hospital and schools have shut down.
However, the reason for this fundraiser goes beyond the financial aid needed to help rebuild Barbuda. It strives to support its people and their rare form of participatory democracy.
Barbuda may have paradisiacal landscapes, white beaches and crystal-clear water. But its peculiar land management system is what makes this island so special.
For more than 300 years, since slavery was abolished and as a result of a successful land redistribution to freed slaves, Barbudans have lived on the island and managed their land without the existence of property titles. Land on Barbuda cannot be bought nor sold and
every major development on the island has to be approved by the majority of Barbudans, represented by the Barbudan Council.
Barbuda's unique collective land management structure is now being threatened by the interests of international investors. And with it, the traditions Barbudans have been proudly preserving for hundreds of years.
WHO I AM
My name is Cristiana Cerri Gambarelli. I am a 24-year old journalist and activist from Italy. I am a passionate lover of our Planet Earth and a fierce fighter of all the things that distract us from our duty to preserve it.
I recently graduated in Economics and Management at the trilingual Free University of Bozen (Italy) and will now devote my time to follow and fight the small and big injustices caused by disaster capitalism.
For a long time I have been inspired by the overwhelming passion and determination of Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein and I wish to follow her example and help find efficient and quick solutions to the climate change crisis.
Since I heard about the story of Barbuda I could not stop thinking about it. It was when I reached out to Barbudan descendant, Tracee Mapp, that I realised how complex and critical the situation really is.
WHY DO I CARE
I have been telling this story and explaining my intentions to many people over the past couple of months. The majority of them asked me: but why do YOU care?!
This is why:
For the past five years I have been delving into the science, causes and moral aspects of climate change.
Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe than ever before. What happened to Barbuda is going to happen again. I believe that Barbuda can set an example of active engagement and resilience for the rest of the world.
Barbuda needs a long-term plan which will allow Barbudans to go back to their homes and preserve their system of communal ownership of the land while engaging in projects for the economic development of the island.
It would be an honour for me to be part of the process of finding solutions for the people of Barbuda, with Barbudans. Because it is in small communities, like this one, that change begins and solutions are found. This change can then be mirrored on a bigger scale in other parts of the world.
WHAT DO I NEED THE MONEY FOR
I am asking for your support to fund my first trip to Barbuda.
With your help I am going to spend there three to four weeks in June to personally meet with the people who build up the Barbudan resistance movement.
The Bill that will repeal the Barbuda Land Act of 2007 is called the Crown Lands Regulation Amendment Bill 2018. It was passed in the Lower House on the 3rd of May and must now be debated by the Senate.
Barbudans need our support. And they need it now. I will gather photo material and video footage, conduct interviews, write journals and do everything I can to help shine a light on their story.
This is how the $2500 will be used:
Besides my own savings which I have used and will be using to fund the project, this is how the additional money will be spent:
- $1000 --> Round-trip from Milan (Italy) to Saint John's (Antigua and Barbuda)
- $250 --> purchase of some sound equipment for my camera that I will need for the interviews and for the shooting on both islands
- $250 --> I calculated three round-trips from Antigua to Barbuda by ferry (each costs 85$) to be able to be flexible in moving from one island to the other depending on what is needed
- $100 -->Fee for Tourist Visa-on-Arrival
- $900 --> I calculated 25 days of permanence (June, 4th-29th) in Barbuda and Antigua and the equivalent of around $35/day to sleep, eat and move around with public transports.
Any additional amount of money will be donated to the community of Barbudans who have been living in the dormitories of the public stadium in Antigua, since the hurricane hit.
THE MAKING OF THE VIDEO
I knew I wanted to tell the story of Barbuda and I knew I had to tell it in a way that would be simple to understand and that would stick in people's minds.
I had never done anything like this before and I wasn't sure where to start but I was often impressed by how effective stop-motion can be. So I decided to experiment with it.
I set up a small studio in the corner of my room,
lent some photography equipment from a good friend,
bought watercolours and coloured pencils,
created some storyboards,
and started playing around with paper, scissors and paper tape.
I had so much fun in the process and for 10 days straight I barely came out of my room.

Da quando l'uragano Irma colpí Barbuda lo scorso settembre distruggendo più del 90% delle case sull'isola, l'attenzione mediatica é stata praticamente inesistente.
Otto mesi dopo, l'isola rimane senza energia elettrica e acqua corrente. L'ospedale e le scuole hanno chiuso.
Tuttavia, la ragione di questa raccolta fondi va al di là degli aiuti finanziari necessari per ricostruire l'isola. Mira invece ad aiutare gli abitanti di Barbuda a preservare il loro raro regime di democrazia partecipativa.
Barbuda è certamente un paradiso di bianche spiagge ed acqua cristallina. Ma il suo metodo peculiare di gestione della terra é ciò che rende l'isola davvero speciale.
Per più di 300 anni, da quando la schiavitù fu abolita ed in seguito ad un'azione di ridistribuzione della terra agli schiavi liberati, i Barbudiani hanno vissuto sull'isola e gestito la propria terra senza l'esistenza dei titoli di proprietà. La terra su Barbuda non può essere né comprata né venduta ed ogni progetto di infrastrutture deve ricevere l'approvazione della maggioranza dei Barbudiani, rappresentati dal Consiglio di Barbuda.
Questa rara struttura di proprietà collettiva della terra é ora messa in pericolo dagli interessi di investitori internazionali. E con questa, le tradizioni che i Barbudiani hanno difeso con orgoglio per centinaia di anni.
CHI SONO
Il mio nome è Cristiana Cerri Gambarelli. Ho ventiquattro anni e sono una giornalista ed attivista italiana. Sono un'amante appassionata del nostro Pianeta Terra e di conseguenza una temuta combattente di tutto ciò che ci distrae dal nostro dovere di preservarla.
Mi sono da poco laureata in Economia e Management alla trilingue Libera Università di Bolzano ed ora dedicherò il mio tempo a combattere le piccole e grandi ingiustizie causate dal "capitalismo dei disastri".
Naomi Klein, autrice e attivista sociale canadese, è stata per molto tempo la mia ispirazione principale e desidero seguire le sue orme ed aiutare a trovare soluzioni veloci ed efficienti alla crisi del cambiamento climatico.
Da quando sono venuta a conoscenza della storia di Barbuda non ho più smesso di pensarci. È stato poi quando ho scritto a Tracee Mapp, discendente barbudiana, che ho davvero realizzato la complessità e importanza di questa situazione.
PERCHÈ CI TENGO
Negli ultimi mesi mi sono spesso trovata a raccontare questa storia e spiegare le mie intenzioni a molte persone. La maggior parte di esse mi hanno chiesto: ma perchè tutto ciò interessa A TE?!
Questo è il perché:
Negli ultimi cinque anni ho approfondito la scienza, le cause e gli aspetti morali del cambiamento climatico.
Disastri naturali come l'uragano Irma sono oggi frequenti e potenti come mai lo sono stati in passato. Quello che è successo a Barbuda succederà di nuovo. Credo perciò che Barbuda possa porsi come esempio di coinvolgimento attivo e capacità di ripresa per il resto del mondo.
Barbuda ha bisogno di un piano a lungo termine che permetta ai Barbudiani di tornare nelle loro case e preservare la loro tradizione di proprietà comune della terra, lavorando allo stesso tempo per lo sviluppo economico dell'isola.
Sarebbe un onore per me far parte del processo di creazione di nuove soluzioni per la gente di Barbuda, con i Barbudiani stessi. Perchè è in comunità piccole come questa che vengono aperti i primi spiragli del cambiamento. Questo cambiamento può poi essere trasmesso in grande scala in altre parti del mondo.
PER COSA MI SERVONO I SOLDI
Sto chiedendo il tuo supporto per finanziare il mio primo viaggio a Barbuda.
Con il tuo aiuto, sarò in grado, a giugno, di trascorrere tre o quattro settimana sull'isola per conoscere personalmente coloro che formano il movimento di resistenza di Barbuda.
Il progetto di legge atto ad abrogare la proprietà comune della terra si chiama Crown Lands Regulation Amendment Bill 2018. È stato approvato dalla Camera Inferiore del Parlamento di Antigua e Barbuda lo scorso 3 maggio e sarà ora discusso nel Senato.
I Barbudiani hanno bisogno del nostro supporto. E ne hanno bisogno adesso. Raccoglierò materiale fotografico e video, farò interviste, documenterò la situazione e farò tutto ciò che è in mio potere per aiutare a dare alla loro storia la giusta attenzione mediatica.
Questo è come saranno utilizzati i 2000€:
850€ --> volo di andata e ritorno da Milano a Saint John's (Antigua e Barbuda)
200€ --> acquisto di equipaggiamento audio per la mia fotocamera che mi servirà per registrare interviste e fare riprese su entrambe le isole
200€ --> ho calcolato tre viaggi in traghetto andata e ritorno da Antigua a Barbuda (ognuno costa all'incirca 70€) per potermi muovere con flessibilità da un'isola all'altra qualora fosse necessario
80€ --> visa turistica
670€ --> ho calcolato 25 giorni di permanenza (dal 4 al 29 giugno) a Barbuda ed Antigua e l'equivalente di all'incirca 27€ al giorno per dormire, mangiare e muovermi su mezzi pubblici.
Tutto ciò che sarà raccolto in più verrà donato alla comunità di Barbudiani che da otto mesi a questa parte vivono nei dormitori dello stadio pubblico di Antigua.
IL VIDEO (THE MAKING OF)
Sapevo di voler raccontare la storia di Barbuda e sapevo di volerla raccontare cosicchè fosse semplice da comprendere e rimanesse impressa nella mente della gente.
Non avevo mai fatto nulla di simile e non ero sicura da dove iniziare ma sono stata spesso stupita in passato dall'efficacia del metodo visivo stop-motion. Ho quindi deciso di sperimentarlo.
Ho organizzato un mini studio in un angolo di camera mia,
preso in prestito equipaggiamento fotografico da un caro amico,
comprato acquarelli e pastelli,
creato dei bozzetti e delle idee,
e ho cominciato a giocare con carta, forbici e nastro adesivo.
Mi sono divertita così tanto nel processo che per dieci giorni di fila non sono praticamente uscita dalla mia stanza.
