UPDATE!   Thanks to all the generous donations, enough funds were raised to clean the granite stone of the monument.   New photos have been added to show the stone before and after the cleaning done by Dale Yo ung of Smet Monuments, St. Stephen NB.  As you can see, Mr. Young has done a wonderful job.  This phase cost $540.50.  We have collected $880 so far which means we have $339.50 that can go towards future phases.  The next phase will be to have the bronze plaque cleaned which is very tarnished as can be seen in the photos below. To professionally strip, repaint and polish the lettering and apply 3 coats of clear, protective coating, the cost is $668.00 + HST for a total of $768.20.   Please help us continue the process of restoring this heritage monument commemorating a significant group of our early settlers.   Donations can be sent to this gofundme project,  by etransfer to  [email redacted] , or by dropping by the Visitor Centre at the Upper Village Mall.  We thank all our donors for their generous contributions!

BACKGROUND

A monument erected in 1949 to commemorate the Harvey Settlement settlers who arrived in 1837 on the Cornelius of Sunderland from the borderlands of Scotland is in disrepair.  There is no designated caretaker responsible for its upkeep.  The Harvey Regional Heritage & Historical Association, also known as Harvey Heritage, is therefore, coordinating the refurbishment of the monument and is leading a fundraiser to this end.

All donations big or small are welcome!!

Do you want to know if your family was amongst those early settlers?  Check out this comprehensive link created by Tim Patterson, a descendant himself, not only about the 1837 Settlers but some who came afterwards.

The required work includes specialized cleaning of the stonework; restoring and adding a protective coating to the brass plaque; and cleaning, repainting, repairing of the base, walkway, chain, and steps.  The estimated cost of the repair is about $3500 to be undertaken by professionals.

The monument is located across the street from the Knox Presbyterian Church (2410 Route 3) in Harvey, York County, New Brunswick, next to a cemetery where many of the 1837 settlers and descendants are buried.  That early settlement developed into a thriving community which is beloved by many to this day.  Any help in restoring this monument would be greatly appreciated by many.

All collected  funds will be donated to Harvey Heritage in order for it to actuate this project  Donations by both debit and credit card are accepted.   Also note that a small fee is taken by GoFundMe which amounts to about 7% of the donation.   Any excess funds collected will go towards future monument restoration projects in the Harvey area.  Unfortunately, Harvey Heritage does not have charitable status and cannot provide tax receipts.  Please note that the beneficiary is Don Moore, Treasurer of the Harvey Regional Heritage & Historical Association and as such, the funds go directly to the organization,.

Donations can also be sent by email to our email address:  [email redacted].

Harvey Heritage members thank you for your consideration of this important local heritage project.

The following photos highlight the wear and tear on the monument that will be fixed by funds received through this campaign.
