Harbor Light Landscaping -- good neighbor fence

$225 of $2,500 goal

They say: good fences make good neighbors. We would like to add  fences and some landscaping at Harbor Light to provide a buffer from our tours to the neighbors.

After being shut down by years of legal issues, New London Maritime Society is happy that New London Harbor Lighthouse-- the tallest and oldest lighthouse on Long Island Sound -- is again open for public tours.

Lack of landscaping is a sore spot when visiting Harbor Lighthouse; it is the first impression one gets when visiting the site. The added fact of walking by the neighbors’ open full-length windows (looking into their bedrooms) is off-putting. But when neighbors start photographing our visitors(!), the whole issue of the recent lawsuit comes to the surface; this interaction puts a damper on what should be a totally pleasant experience and one free of controversy.

37866802_1561951905602960_r.jpegA landscape design and fences or dense shrubbery borders are needed to take back control visitors' experience of the site.

37866802_1553014030916971_r.jpegLandscaping and fences should make our tours less disagreeable to the neighbors.
We'd also like to make the property as beautiful as we can.

We expect that landscaping's effect on the site will be transformative --  turning visits into the kind of delightful experience one gets visiting the High Line. People will love our ‘pocket park’ and tell their friends about it. In the short-term, their photographs and selfies will add to the buzz.

Of course, going up into the lighthouse is the culmination of the visit. New signage will enrich what visitors learn about the site, the harbor, the boats, and New London. With added signage and landscaping, visitors will finally be able to linger at the site, read, and learn more about Harbor Lighthouse,.

We believe these changes will demonstrate that NLMS is a good neighbor. As well, NLMS finally will present Harbor Light in its best aspect.

NLMS believes in the democratization of our historic sites.
The public built the lighthouse, the public has maintained it since 1761!
With your help, NLMS can keep this landmark accessible to the public for future generations.
We believe historic tourism is good for the City of New London.

In my experience as an educator, nothing is more exciting for young people than visiting in the lantern of this lighthouse.

Hello everyone.
We just today received a donation of $100 towards the landscaping at Harbor Light.
Looks like it will take some time to get what we need, but I am hopeful we can move forward this summer.
