Haiti - Operation Tin Roofs

My name is Rena Salomon, I am better known as "The Angel in a Hummer" for my humanitarian work after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in August of 2005.  My team and I searched for and rescued over 115 people and provided medical attention and a shelter for those we found.

On October 4th 2016 Haiti faced yet another disaster shortly after the devastating 7.0 magnitutude earthquake that killed over 220,000 people and left over 350,000 injured. The government received substantle financial assistance and yet the community there has never been rebuilt and the community still struggles! We need to be sure the Haitians get the financial aid directly to rebuild their lives.

In 2010 I deployed a team to Port Au Prince Haiti, and our mission was to rescue the surviving children of Simon's Center for Hope which originally had 57 children residing under their care.  We found 12 surviving children with Simon and his staff in a tent up on a mountainside.  For the years that followed to date I have stayed actively involved on a financial and personal level as the co-founder and friend of Simon's Center of Hope.

On October 3rd I received a call from Simon expressing concern over the children's safety and welfare due to hurricane Matthew that was due to hit landfall in Haiti. Communication was lost until late Monday evening, October 4th, when Simon gave me the news that the children were safe and that the hurricane missed Port Au Prince and that it hit a neighboring city 6 hours away named Jeremie, also know as "the city of poets".

Simon informed me that all of his family and friends live in that city, which was his hometown, and he was unable to communicate with anyone to the hurricane. Hearng the concern in his voice for his loved ones, I made a decision to train a small intimate team of 6 and deploy my team. With hurricane Matthew headed toward Florida, all airlines had suspended air travel until October 9th. After spending 14 hours on the phone with airlines, I was able to secure flights for my entire team.

Our first mission was to go directly into the city of Jeremie to search and rescue Simon's immediate family, childhood friends and neighbors.  The second part of our mission was to provide any and all needed assistance searching for remaining missing victims and provide triage and medical aid as needed. The final part of our mission was to provide basic essentials and supplies such as furniture, appliances, toys, water purifier,  and other needed supplies for Simon's center for help located in Port Au Prince.

Upon our arrival into the "city of poets", Jeremie, we realized that many of the homes there were constructed out of stone walls and metal roofing. With wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour nearly 80% of the metal rooftops were destroyed.  We were able to fund and provide rooftops for 10-12 homes and an orphanage nearby that houses 50 children.  Materials and resources to rebuild were limited.

Myself and the team returned October 14th with heavy hearts and saddened with the frustration of leaving so many people in horrible living conditions such as no water, power or food available to them.  Many are still wthout protective shelter and face  continued storms and unable to shield the children.

On October 15th my team and I decided to put into action "Haiti relief mission #2", "city of poets", operation "Tin Roofs". Our plan is to deploy on Nov 13th 2016 to Haiti to assist in relocating 250 children who have no home and that are living outside in a tent. We will find a home, deliver food, clothing and other life sustaining items that the children need. Please send me a message if you are interested.

On July 29th 1986 I took an oath to serve God if my sons life was spared from cancer, which has lead me to do the work that I do when Gods children face tragedy and struggles.  I am one person and I can not save the masses alone.  I am pleading to anyone who always feels compelled to help but never really know how.  Any and all help will go directly to the people and not one dollar will go to staffing.  Everyone on my team is a volunteer and do this work because they believe in giving and kindness wanting nothing in return.

Thank you for donating, without us these children will stay without help. It will take a Nation to rebuild this nation! God bless you and your families. If this was your child that suffered a natural disaster and became an Orphan would you want them to feel abandoned and that no one cares. Let's do our part to show the amazing Children of Haiti that we see them and that we care!

Love you all,
Rena Salomon
