Haiti Medical Relief Trip
My name is Jake (Philip) Bacon. I am a photojournalist based in Flagstaff, Arizona.
I have been asked by Dr. Bull Durham from the Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps to accompany the NAVMC medical team to the Bernard Mews Hospital in Port Au Prince, Haiti December 2 through December 12 to document the volunteer work done by Flagstaff physicians and medical personel to help the residents affected by hurricane Matthew.
The purpose of this invitation is to tell the stories of the individuals who donate their skills and time to change lives in Haiti. I will also be telling the stories of current and former patients and how the medical interventions provided by the NAVMC staff impact their lives. While in Haiti I will be visiting the orphanage supported by NAVMC to tell the stories of the children who live there and the staff who support them.
Donations made in suport of this fund will be used for my travel expenses to and from Haiti including travel expenses, and the expenses arising from documenting the work of the medical team in Haiti.
The photographs, videos and interviews that I will create in Haiti will in turn be donated to the NAVMC to be used in future fundraising and to educate the community on the work that is being done in Haiti.
I will be taking vacation time from the newspaper where I work to make this a personal project in support of the good work done my so many medical professionals on the mountain to a country a continent away.
The money raised by this campaign will pay travel expenses to and from Haiti plus fees paid to aid organizations in Haiti to cover room and board while there as well as expenses generated in documenting the work done by the NAVMC team.
Any funds left over will be donated directly to Dr. Bull Durham at NAVMC for relief work in Haiti.
Due to the response of this campaign so far $1,500 of the funds raised will be spent on trave expenses for an operating room nurse who is travelling with the team. This money will cover vaccinations, $400, Medishare fee, $300, Orpanage room and board $100, and other related expenses for this staff member.
Funds will be drawn from this account to pay for travel expenses to Haiti. These expenses include airfare $1,000, lodging, a $300 donation to Medishare (the organization that hosts volunteers in Haiit), immunizations $400 and other costs directly related to the trip.
On my return from the trip the images and videos gathered in Haiti will be displayed in a gallery setting and then the prints from that display will be donated to NAVMC to be used in future fund raising efforts.
