ACT Juniors to Frisbee Worlds

Donation protected
Hey everyone,

Canberra Ultimate players Ryan, Bill, Rachel and Miriam have all been selected to play for the Australian u20 Ultimate Frisbee teams in Wroclaw, Poland later this year. We all had to attend two selection camps earlier this year, one in Melbourne, and one in Sydney. From these two camps, we were selected on the final teams from a large pool of players and now have the opportunity to represent our country at the World Junior Ultimate Championships. The only downside to this is that the trip will cost us approximately $6,000 each (here is the breakdown of the costs):

Tournament Fees (including team fee) $150
Accommodation (includes breakfast and dinner) $500
Tournament Food (lunch snacks) $200
Support Staff $1,000
Training camps 3 x $300 = $900
Flights & pretournament accommodation/travel $3,100
Uniform $120

Unfortunately, while Frisbee is recognized by the Australian Institute of Sport and International Olympic Committee, the sport receives no funding and so we are all asking for financial assistance to help us get to Worlds.

We have all trained super hard and are all very frothing to go away, so any donation at all will be incredibly appreciated by all of us.

For those who don't know all of us, here is some information about out Frisbee adventures so far:

Miriam

Miriam began her ultimate career in the deep end, playing Youth Nationals in 2013 and making an instant impression on selectors and spectators alike, leading to selections on numerous elite mixed teams such as Skywhales and Discotheque.

She has become renowned and feared on the Frisbee field for her intimidating stall counts, breaking numerous records for decibels reached during her long career, while her safe handling was recognized via selection for the Trans Tasman series in 2015.

The peak of Miriam's frisbee career was being awarded MVP of the prestigious South Canberra Ultimate league, beating out well known Dingo Andrew Jackson and well known Greyhound Matthew Svatos for the award. Miriam spoke out after winning the prize, calling her win "expected", and calling it a testament to her "dedicated training and natural talent".

Despite a shock omission from the 2016 Firetails squad, Miriam is looking forward to representing Terra, and she expects to add to her MVP awards at World Junior Ultimate Championships.

Fun fact - Miriam has only been onside once in her 3 years of ultimate

Rachel

Turning down a lucrative offer to play for the Australia Diamonds at the 2015 Netball World Cup, Rachel decided to focus her athletic talents on Frisbee, as she enjoyed the mixed aspect of it, using it as an opportunity to find love. Despite not yet finding reciprocated love, Rachel found that she naturally took to the sport, patenting the high release flick, a throw that has gone on to be used by many elite Frisbee teams.

Rachel has compared her on field playing style to Brodie Smith after watching his 'how to layout' video in excess of 200 times, while her off field style has been compared to Grumpy, the dwarf.

While she is disappointed that she is playing on a female only team for Worlds, she hopes to find love on her trip to Poland, and maybe score some goals as well.

Fun fact - Rachel is the most intelligent of any Canberra Ultimate player, holding the impressive IQ of 300.

Ryan

Ryan began playing Frisbee in 2013 after potential careers in dodgeball and Dream Team fell through, and hasn't looked back since, earning selection on one of the most prestigious sporting programs in the world, the UC Buckets.

When his team lost after being up 8-1 at EUG's in 2015, Ryan worked on mental visualization for 3 months straight and now has the ability to imagine entire games of frisbee in high definition.

He has overcome numerous physical obstacles to represent Australia, including toes that hug each other, having a vertical jump of only 6 centimetres, and constant cowardly attacks by the self-confessed "#1 thug of ANU", Lachlan MacWilliam.

Fun fact - Ryan once watched Youtube for 9 hours straight.

Bill

Bill's frisbee career started relatively tamely, before a growth spurt of 3 feet saw him rise the ranks and become an internationally recognized athlete.

After being dubbed "the next Beau Kittredge" in Skyd Magazine, his reputation grew and he was selected for the Trans Tasman series of 2015, scoring 76 goals and throwing 0 assists. While he was happy about being selected for Worlds, he still hasn't achieved his primary goal in the sport of Ultimate, to get his very own 'Canberra Ultimate League Champion' disc.

Bill's tendency to layout has seen him with many admirers, but sadly it has also seen him with many concussions. His average of 2 concussions per game over the last year has meant that he has literally not slept in that time period, causing numerous health defects. Doctors hold concerns about Bill's attendance at the tournament, however in true Bill fashion, he has brushed these concerns aside.

He is looking forward to the tournament, in particular the first half of the first game, before he will inevitably be ruled out for the rest of it with injury.

Fun fact - Bill owns three chickens, and lets them sleep in bed with him at night!

Now that you know more about us, we hope that you can donate and help us get to Worlds. Any money at all is super super appreciated and we will hold you in our hearts forever.
