Helping to keep our kids safe.....
GrowSmartGirls is a seminar series that provides early and timely information to kids and their parents on some very critical issues (sexual assault, cyber safety, mental health, substance abuse, etc.)
The goal is simply to empower youth with knowledge/skills/tools to improve their situational awareness and respond to societal dangers, helping them to protect themselves or help their friends. And while the initiative was designed with girls in mind, boys are invited to attend and benefit from the information sessions and the workshops.
The series is run completely on volunteer energy. However, there are costs associated with organizing these talks: venue rentals,speaker fees/travel, various supplies. All funds raised will go towards these costs.
The talks are free to attend, and are supported by the Ottawa Police and local community organizations. The first talk on the difficult topic of sexual assault took place in the Glebe on Wed. Feb. 21, and was well attended and well received. Our March 1 session on cyber safety (with a self defence workshop) is "sold out".
Continuing the series will ensure that as many children as possible in our community can learn how to protect themselves, and that the series can expand to other areas in Ottawa (and beyond).
