It is with heavy hearts that we come to the Santa Barbara community and beyond to ask for your help. Granada Books: A Community Bookstore has worked very hard to become a gathering place for ideas, inspiration, and most importantly, where you can come in and walk among the books.

This is a challenging time for the independent bookstore in the realm of on line merchandising and the deep discounts of mega-chain stores. What they cannot give is personal attention, a choice of several books recommended by an informed bookseller, nor the opportunity to discover an author you never knew about until you saw their book on our shelves.

We are hoping to raise $50,000 to bridge our operations through to profitability. This is the minimum we need to succeed. If 50 people were able to donate $1000 (or bring together 5 book loving friends at $200 each) to save Granada Books, your community bookstore from day one, we could do this. There are no donations too small or too large for this effort.

Given this extended time frame, through your financial support, we believe we can continue to build our business beyond the normal growing pains of a fledgling enterprise and establish Granada Books as the literary anchor of downtown Santa Barbara.

You can help us keep The Dream alive with your contribution. The entire team at Granada Books: A Community Bookstore thanks you.

'The time has come,' the walrus said, 'to talk of many things: of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings.' - Lewis Carroll

Today was our day of decision, and despite the remarkable, amazing, heartfelt, and overwhelmingly generous giving from our community, Granada Books is unable to continue and must close our doors in May.

Our vision of creating a space where the people of Santa Barbara could browse the aisles of books and discover a new writer lasted but a brief moment in time. Every small business that opens its doors hopes for the best and faces the day with optimism. Our days were punctuated by your laughter, your love of books, and for that we are grateful.

You have made us your community bookstore during our short time downtown. It was our hope to establish a legacy for Santa Barbara, but bigger forces beyond our control rule the day. Instead we have a shared dream that lasted for a nanosecond, but what a beautiful dream it was.

To the dreamers of the world, and our very special local readers, thank you for giving what, for some, was a difficult decision in these financial times. Please know that you can ask for a refund through this website. We know you gave in good faith, and so we want you to know you have that option. The funds that remain will be used for our staff salaries through closing.

Of course this isn't good-bye, we have been a part of this community for a long time. We will remain open through the month of April, and plan to host all the events we have currently on our calendar.

Please come in and talk with us, we'd love to see you!

It has been a pleasure to be your bookstore.

Granada Books: A Community Bookstore is lucky to have friends like Judith Torres, children's book author and storyteller. Yesterday at the store, she told stories, led the children in song, and encouraged story telling of their own with activities. Her books, Duck, Duck, Moose and Bearly Awake are wonderful tales that capture the imagination.

Torres also created two fun gift baskets, including books, pajamas, and a cuddly friend, which she donated as gifts to the store. Come in and check them out. We will have the drawing on April 2, First Thursday evening at 6 pm, and you do not have to be present to win.

For all her effort, she also contributed 75% of her sales to our campaign to #SaveGranadaBooks, which yielded a gift of more than $100 from her sales, and she walked in the door with a cash donation from a friend of hers for $100 as well.

This is but one lovely demonstration of the love our community has for the kind of space we want to keep alive in our downtown district.

Decision time is drawing near, and we are exploring options beyond the regular retail model. Stay tuned, and please continue to share widely.

Greetings,
We are feeling optimistic about the future because of the wonderful response from the community in support of keeping Granada Books as a cultural resource in the downtown district.

We are a third of the way to our ambitious goal of $50,000 by next Monday. We are grateful to all of you who have contributed to keeping our doors open and new books on the shelves.

I heard an interview on the radio with one of the founding photographers of Everyday Africa, a pictorial website of the magnificent continent of Africa and her people. It struck a chord with me because I believe that Granada Books is an Everyday kind of place. This is where you can browse while waiting for a friend for dinner, or pop in for a quick birthday gift for your co-worker, or you just want to walk among the stacks and see what surprises await.

We want to continue to be your downtown literary anchor, every day. These are just a couple of everyday moments at Granada Books.

Thank you all for your support, and we ask if you would consider sharing our message widely among your friends and family who share your love of books.

One of the greatest joys of working in a bookstore is hearing people's comments as they walk in the door for the first time. "Oh, it's a real bookstore!" or, my favorite, "It smells like a bookstore." With your help we hope to smell like a bookstore for a very long time.

Please consider a contribution to bridge our operations to sustainability. We are almost at 25% of our goal. We have 10 days to push on through to success! Please share widely, send via e mail to your friends who are not on Facebook.

Of course another way to support our effort is to come into the store and buy books. Consider books for that next birthday present for your co-worker, family member, grandchild, or to treat yourself to a new read.
