Huruma Orphanage Project

Back in November 2014 I came to Arusha, Tanzania to volunteer for four months and I fell in love with Huruma Orphanage. I felt for this orphange becasue they are one of the poorest centres in Arusha, located right next to the Arusha city dump. There are 24 kids living at the orphanage right now, but in total there are 45 children the rest are attending school at a boarding school so they live there for the school year. Their ages are from age 5 up to 16.  In addition, there are youth that are staying who are the care takers, who have actually grown up there themselves. At Huruma they are like one big family who all are looking out for eachother. Their kitchen is one of the many things that could be upgraded for them, they only have a coal burning stove in the kitchen with charred walls throughout. The kitchen by any means is not in any condition to be serving the children their meals from, flies flying around everywhere. I would also love to repair some of the areas throughout the orphange, where either the roof is falling off or there are holes in the wall. My goal for my current visit in Tanzania is to build them a sepereate cooking house, as well as include a bathroom/shower house, with gender designated bathrooms. We are wanting to use a coal burning stove that has the coal burning on the outside so it is healthier for the people cooking as well as the children. As well, we want to set Huruma up with a chicken incubator and chickens to allow them to have access to eggs and chickens for a some healthy meals, also giving the children the skills on farming chickens and their eggs. They may even sell some of their eggs and hatchlings to bring in some income for the centre. The childrens main meal is beans and rice (wali maharage). The estimate of the building materials, labour, plumbing,  equiptment and chickens while cost around 15, 000 USD ( USD is what we can use here in Tanzania), which will exchange to around
20, 000 CAN. What ever can be fundraised will be greatly appreciated and will be put to excellent use. Thank you all for helping better the orphaned childrens lives at Huruma in advance!!! :)
