Homeless Guy Serves in U.S. Senate

Donation protected
Hi my name is Charles.  I’m a 63-year-old grandfather.  During the past 8 years, I’ve served some of the most powerful people in the world as a contract worker in the U.S. Senate cafeteria.

I’m also homeless.

You can watch this CNN story  to learn more about me or read this Washington Post column

People think that folks working in the Senate have good jobs.  But the truth is just the opposite.

My co-workers and I only make around $11 an hour.  Our CEO makes $4,500 an hour. The foreign corporation he runs, and that we work for, makes billions in profit.

It’s just not fair.

Because I make so little, I can't save for emergencies.  Until recently, I was renting a room in a house.  But the owner couldn’t afford to pay the mortgage and I ended up on the streets.‎

Today, I sleep near the White House outside a metro entrance. You may have passed by me.

The truth is that the current President – as well as the people now running for the White House – walked past me and others who’ve served them in the Senate.  It’s like we’re invisible to them.

We cook their meals, wash their dishes, and clean their bathrooms. Yet these politicians never asked if we could afford to put food on our table or keep a roof over our heads.

They never bothered to ask why so many of us use public aid and church charity to make ends meet.

My co-worker Bertrand Olotara, who used to be a teacher, just wrote an article for The Guardian  about how embarrassing it is to cook for Senators but then use food stamps to feed your own kids.

But this campaign is not just about Bertrand and me.

The politicians we serve have let the US Government become America’s biggest low-wage job creator, funding over 2 million poverty jobs with taxpayer money. That means there are at least 2 million other “Charles Gladdens” and “Bertrand Olotaras” out there all across America. We’re all just 1 or 2 paychecks away from ending up homeless and hungry.

That’s why my co-workers and I are leading a new movement called Good Jobs Nation. We’re holding protests to get politicians to make sure our taxpayer dollars go to creating good jobs for the hard-working people who serve America.

We don’t want charity.  We want real change.

That’s why I’m asking you to donate to our Good Jobs Nation Worker Fund.

Your contribution will help me get off the street and help other workers who are on the brink of ending up like me. More importantly, it will also help me and my co-workers keep fighting to get politicians to use our taxpayer dollars to create good American jobs, not just line the pockets of foreign CEOs.

With your help, we can get closer to providing every person who works hard get a shot at the American Dream.

Thank you,

Charles Gladden
