From Goats to Pollinators
In case you missed it…last summer 4 goats took up residence near the Botume House in the Middlesex Fells where they munched on invasive plants such as Knotweed and Bittersweet. The goats quickly became local celebrities and the subject of many selfies!
Stoneham Volunteers plans to host the goats again this year at the same location for a whopping two weeks starting June 3rd!!
The goats will help clear excess growth, while (ahem) fertilizing the area. When the goats are finished, the area will be further prepared for its future as a pollinator haven and educational site. This area will be accessible to hikers from the trail and will be the home to indigenous plants attracting native bees, butterflies, and birds.
This fundraising campaign will be open until June 17, 2019. Funds raised will be used to:
· Host 4 goats for 2 weeks in the Middlesex Fells near the Botume House in Stoneham (cost: $2000)
· Support plans for the site’s future as a pollinator haven by funding plants and educational materials, such as flower and pollinator identification signage
