Giving Back in Brookings

Today I woke up to the first snowfall in Brookings, October 27. It was also a bitter 27 degrees with the wind chill making it even colder.  Everyone who lives in South Dakota or Minnesota, anywhere in the Midwest to be honest, knows just how difficult the weather can be here.

Around 1:00 in the afternoon, the dog my roommate was watching ended up running away, so here I am bundled up in my big, nice, warm, winter coat and warm winter boots, searching for this puppy everywhere. I had only been outside for a few minutes, yet I was so cold. I crossed the street and a ways down I saw a couple of kids and didn't think much of it - they heard my yelling for the puppy. Long story short the puppy was found and I was able to go back into my house to warm up.

Not even 5 minutes later, the two kids that I saw riding around on their bikes pull up into my yard. The little boy, maybe around 10 or so, rang the doorbell as his older sister looked on. I didn't know what he was going to ask me, but I was curious as to why out of all the houses on the block, they stopped at mine (maybe it was as simple as they knew someone was home). He started out asking how we made the pumpkins sitting on our deck (Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc.). And then slowly transitioned into asking if he and his sister would be able to rake our yard for us to earn money to buy new snow boots and winter coats.

My heart broke instantly. No child ever should have to worry about staying warm, and obtaining basic winter necessities. I didn't have any cash on me at the time, just my card. So I made them a deal that if they came back when the weather was warmer that we would help them rake the yard to make some money. They left on their bikes, and I walked inside and cried.

I take so much for granted in this life, especially the things like winter coats and boots that I have always been given. It wasn't until that moment that I truly realized some people don't even have what they need, and here I am with way more than I could ever want. I am living selfishly, I admit that, but I don't have to live that way forever. I can do something, I have that ability.

I was thinking of how I would be able to help this cause, to give basic winter necessities to those in need - especially children. Nowadays social media is so impactful, that I decided to set up this gofundme account  to be able to raise funds to donate winter items to children in need within Brookings county.

I am not the type of person to ask for money from anyone, but it's a lot easier to do when it's not about myself. Every child deserves to be warm and feel safe.

Any amount of money is appreciated, and will benefit a child in need.

Thanks for reading - prayers to all.
