GIVE A FORK: community art project

Donation protected
Hello!

Gioia here, the artist behind GIVE A FORK.

GIVE A FORK is an art project engaging conversations about our community relationship to food.

This collaborative art project will culminate with a large public sculpture made from household forks collected and donated by residents of Sacramento. In addition to providing the raw materials for this art piece, interested community members will have an opportunity to help with the fabrication.

The sculpture will be completed by Summer of 2016 and installed at a yet to be determined location within District 5 (which includes Oak Park, Curtis Park, Hollywood Park, Colonial Heights, Lawrence Park, Z’berg Park, South Land Park and more).

Over the course of this project, some of the topics GIVE A FORK hopes to address through events and discussions include: food insecurity within the region, nutrition, urban gardening and food culture from both a personal and cultural perspective and as our newly branded regional identity as the Farm to Fork Capital.

Each and every fork donated symbolizes care and optimism for the future of Sacramento and the diverse neighborhoods that make up District 5.

GIVE A FORK is a social practice art work conceived, created and fostered by me, Gioia Fonda, as part of the Crocker Art Museum’s Block by Block arts engagement initiative focused in the City of Sacramento Districts 2, 5, and 8, all made possible with a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.

The ideas and intentions of GIVE A FORK are big, bigger than the grant awarded to the project.  GIVE A FORK was awarded a grant for the amount of $10,000. Although that sounds like a lot of money, and it is, a project of this scale will require additional funding.

Right now as artist/designer/project manager for GIVE A FORK, my fee is budgeted at $3000, with the remaining $7000 to be used on the materials and labor to fabricate the sculpture and to pay for general support for the project (printing costs, staffing, studio rental, insurance, possible permits, website, outreach materials etc). I encourage you to visit the GIVE A FORK website to see the budget for yourself.

Our current fundraising goal is to match the initial grant, raising another $10,000 to be used mostly for the following:

        -further fabrication costs
        -donor incentives
        -volunteer support
-possibly lighting for the piece at night
-and lastly to add little more to my fee*

*An additional $1,500 is what I hope to add to my fee, but only if we meet this goal. I have been working on this project since September and will continue working on it through July. This project really requires a lot of hours away from my regular painting practice. Less time in the studio is a loss of income for me. It would be great (not to mention rare) to earn a reasonable amount for all the work I'm putting into this.

The sculpture is scheduled to be completed and installled by July of 2016. It would be wonderful to have the bulk of this fundraising in place by mid-March. This would allow us ample time to buy the necessary materials for the actual sculpture and ensure that we have enough cash on hand needed to keep the project rolling along.

Any funds raised beyond our goal and not used on the project will be donated to local non-profits with missions that align with GIVE A FORK.

I  believe this project has the potential to bring members of our community together in meaningful and unique ways. I feel strongly that District 5 will benefit from having a very special and collaborative community art piece like GIVE A FORK. The final sculpture made from all of those thousands of donated forks will come to represent our unity, our strength, our creativity, our resourcefulness and our ability to collaborate towards a healthier and happier community. The sweat equity, the relationships formed, the fun had and the civic pride built through collaboration, these, probably more so than the actual sculpture, will truly have a positive and lasting impact.

I can think of few greater joys, as an artist, than to see one of my crazy ideas, shared with and supported by so many diverse people, brought to fruition for everyone to enjoy. That would be just about the coolest thing ever!

Please consider donating money to help see GIVE A FORK realized to it’s fullest potential. If a whole bunch of people make small donations and maybe a few more folks make some larger donations, we’ll reach our goal in no time.
