Gary's Bernie Journey to Philly!

Donation protected
Update: 6/23/2016

I've been selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Texas! I am still pressing forward for Bernie and for OUR revolution. I had intended on staying offstie with a wonderful friend, but due to the shenanagains we have seen at other conventions we want our Texas state delegates to stay together as a group, so I have had to make adjustments to the amount of money I will need to get to Philly and be an effective delegate for Bernie Sanders. I have had so many wonderful friends and stragers donate to my Bernie Journey, and I appreciate everyone who has helped me, even though I am a delegate from Texas, I will be representing all of you at the convention, and will make sure our voice is heard!

Hi, I'm Gary, I have been volunteering for Bernie Sanders since November in Houston, and have volunteered through NOLA, Milwaukee, Brooklyn, Portland, and now I am on the train headed to Oakland CA. I keep asking myself, how the hell did I get here........ Well here it is.

It all started when I worked up the courage and went to my first Houstonian for Bernie meeting in November of 2015, just over 6 months ago. I met some incredible people. This is where I first met my friend Krystal, who has fought by my side in 3 states now. Thank you Krystal for always being a friend to me and helping me along this journey, you are like a sister to me. She was on the front lines in Texas, Louisiana, and Oregon and she is amazing. Once the Bernie Sanders HQ opened in Houston it took me a little while to build up the courage to go in and make phone calls to total strangers in front of total strangers. Up until that point I was pretty much a home body, I had anxiety, I had self doubt, and I didn’t enjoy interacting with people most of the time because I always felt judged and insecure. Friends would try and get me to go out and I would always have an excuse, but once I began going to Bernie HQ those things became easier, I could interact with strangers because we were all kinda outsiders in a way. One day I decided to host a Bernie event at my apartment to find other supporters in the area. There were 5 people signed up, and I was stoked for Montrose for Bernie to be a thing. One person showed up. Edward, DJ extraordinaire and all around cool guy, we tried to brain storm ideas, but in the end we ended up deciding that we needed to be at HQ, making it happen with the campaign instead of off on our own. He’s been by my side in NOLA, Houston, and PDX as well, and is as devoted to Bernie today as he was when we met at my place all those months ago. So we both started spending a lot of time there at HQ. I had met the director Theresa at a Houstonian for Bernie meeting, but didn't get to know her until I went to HQ. Her direction was key in me being where I am today, she taught me so much about organizing and helped give me the courage to talk in front of different political groups in the Houston area, facing one of my biggest fears. Aside from Theresa there was one constant at Houston Bernie HQ. Raun. He was always there, he was always happy to help do whatever was needed. It took awhile to learn his sense of humor and his aptitude for sarcasm, but once I did I knew I had a friend for life, he is family to me. He knows things about me before I do sometimes, and helped set into motion a very important change in my life. By December I was at HQ any time that I had free time, and was getting close with so many volunteeres. During one of our big Day of Actions I hosted an event with Travis at our friend Jane Anns office. (I love Jane Ann! She is a Bernie Believer as strong as any!) His energy and determination helped me push through the long days that were getting longer. When the March 1st primary finally came around HQ was practically home to me since my partner Julio and I had moved a few weeks before, and I had neglected unpacking. Julio has been so supportive of me during this journey, I could not ask for a better partner in my life. On March 2nd, my friends Raun, Travis, Krystal and myself went to dinner with the director for our Bernie HQ Theresa and her partner Chris. She ?jokingly? asked if some of us wanted to go knock on doors in New Orleans that weekend. We were all really exhausted from our Texas GOTV, and for some reason Raun and Travis agreed, and I said it sounded fun. I think I got tricked into it, because the next thing I know I got an email with housing information and time of departure for Edward, Raun, Travis, and me. Well during that trip I was fired from my job. Long story short, it was probably the best thing to happen to me, and having my friends there to support me through it was amazing. We bonded so much over those few days they are all family to me now. That is a common occurrence during this journey, bonding with people and feeling like family. Like community. We put in some late nights working in NOLA, and it was so much fun working for Sarah at their HQ and working the city! Some of us headed home, some stayed to explore the city more. Next thing I know Travis and Raun are headed to Salt Lake City to volunteer and after some long talks with friends I decided that I wanted to go to another state and help Bernie also. So after talking with Theresa it was decided that Wisconsin needed some help, so she arranged for me to be expected up there, and I took the MegaBus 30 hours from Houston to Dallas, Dallas to Chicago, Chicago to Milwaukee. Milwaukee was a (Side note, I just got a text from a volunteer Alessandra, who I met in New York, who Lives in Seattle, who is going to Portland tomorrow to volunteer, I’m sad I missed her! Another Volunteer Mark I met in Milwaukee is flying into Portland on Saturday and will be knocking on doors for Bernie!) Milwaukee was a blast! I met volunteers from across the country there. Teresa and Linda from Portland, a mother daughter team who worked their butts off helping out, David and Ben from Florida who were great canvassers and trainers. Riley from NOLA who I was sharing housing with and loved recording our conversations and painting, Brad from Southern CA who had lived in Sweden for 3 years or longer. He came back to America just to help campaign for Bernie. Keith, who I think is from PA, who could run a canvassing event with his hands tied behind his back and who got me housing in my next stop on my Journey and has constantly checking in with me, planning for the future of the movement. Emily the animal rights activist from Manhattan who brought us vegan donuts so many mornings, and who has been to so many states helping Bernie! The Detroit crew, Jeff, Dan, Daniel, Derek and Erin, grassroots guys who have genius ideas and have helped create several tools to help people on their Bernie Journeys and college outreach in so many states! I also met some amazing local Bernie supporters, my dear friend Sara who helped run the phone banks and drove from polling location to polling location on Election Day keeping a tally of numbers. Terry who would bring us food to keep the troops fed! Dickey, a guy who just came in to canvass, and ended up taking home 2 out of state volunteers so they could stay a few more days and keep pushing on for Bernie! Bobbie and Don who invited me to stay at their home while I volunteered, and invited Riley and me to Easter dinner on my second day there. Again, people treating me like family, a sense that we were welcome there as family. It was a wonderful experience working in the office there. Whitney, Roger, and Hanna were great leaders, and allowed me to help run the phone banks and greet volunteers as they came in and direct them where they needed to be. One day when I was working the phone bank the campaign director in Milwaukee Whitney said that there were some volunteers (Greg and Erika who I still email and will hopefully be meeting for dinner at one point in the Bay Area) who wanted to help other volunteers keep working for Bernie by paying for flights from Chicago to New York to help with the campaign. I had every intention of going to Portland after Wisconsin to join up with my friends Raun and Travis, but after talking to all my friends and my partner Julio, I chose to accept the ticket, and next thing I know my 2 week trip is turned into a 4 week trip and I left Wisconsin the night of the primary after polls closed and flew out to NYC the next day. I couldn’t find housing in New York (Seriously, amazing views Photos through dirty train windows will follow) I couldn’t find housing in New York at first, but my friend Keith knew someone who knew someone. And so I was connected with Chris in Harlem, musical genius, French horn player, jazz pianist, member of the New Jersey Symphony and plays in Le Mis, another all around cool guy. I stayed in his converted office where he had built a bed about 2 feet from the ceiling. The first night I was worried I would be claustrophobic, but I think the exhaustion from Wisconsin had caught up with me so I slept like a rock, and after that I didn’t give it a second thought. He would play his piano into all hours of the night, and it was amazing falling asleep listening to someone play music, not just the radio. Commuting to the Brooklyn office was an experience, mass transit has been fun in every city, but I think New York was the best because it was always going and there were always people interested in my Bernie gear. I would give out lit, buttons, shirts if I had them, and people loved it. I only ever got one guy who told me to F off when he looked at my Bernie shirt. The Brooklyn office was always so busy. There was always something going on or coming in or going out. I got to work with Sarah from NOLA again, and she was working with a crack team of locals and staff up there. Gail and Tia were phone bank captains, always keeping the troops going even when a class full of high school students’ show up to phone bank and when the internet went down. Eli and Anita (Anita also is letting me stay at her house in Oakland while I volunteer) who did everything from help direct volunteers to train canvassers and keep the office running smooth. Lisa the office manager who kept all those volunteers fed and in a clean space. She was a volunteer there in Brooklyn and she was there all the time, so organized and so nice and kept that office running like a machine! We had some great talks and I loved working with her, again, so many amazing people I have met along the way, all committed to pushing forward Bernie Sanders. I helped work rallies, I recruited volunteers, I canvassed and I fliered subway stations. I learned things from union workers and staffers that I would never have been exposed to in my old life, and I think that Brooklyn is where I decided I no longer want an office job, I think this experience has opened up completely new avenues for me. My time in New York was split between two houses. First with Chris in Harlem, then with a sweet couple Eni and Greg in Brooklyn. This would be the first election Eni could vote in and she was very excited. I taught her how to phone bank, and she made calls to voters in New York as well as let me stay in their home. It was still a 45 minute commute, even though it was in the same borough! After the election I could have gone back to Houston and joined back with Josephine and Theresa planning the Senate District for the Texas State Democratic Convention, or begin building our coalition for progressive change locally after Bernie is elected, but there was a 67 dollar flight to Portland out of Chicago, and how could I pass it up? A friend had given me money to help me along the trip, and I used that to get to Portland to reunite with my Houston friends! One problem, there was a day and a half layover in Chicago between flights. This time Brad came to the rescue, connecting me with Darrell, a canvasser who carpooled to Milwaukee from Chicago to canvass for Bernie. He connected me with Sara, an art teacher in Chicago. She has her own bad ass house and rents rooms to people. My room had a Labyrinth poster with David Bowie on it and the door was a hidden bookshelf! So on April 20th, I spent the day with two people I didn’t know and who welcomed me into their home, and gave me rides to and from the airport, and they are amazing! The next day on the way to the airport I got to check eating at White Castle off of my bucket list, and managed to catch my flight to Portland. (I had missed my first flight out of New York by like 15 minutes and was rerouted through Boston to Chicago) I had intended on taking a break when I arrived in Portland, but since their voter registration deadline was 4 days away I hit the dialer and tried to recruit more volunteers. I worked a rally in Salem and got about 30 people to commit to help Bernie win by knocking doors and making calls. I helped out in the office there in Portland and met some cool people, Jazzy, Ian, Cole, Pearl, James, Morgan, and Patrick were all working with my Houston friends making sure the state gets the attention it needs, and Jitterbug,

Ian’s dog, was president of Dogs for Bernie there in the office and the office mascot. You can’t walk past Jitterbug and not pet her. I don't know if having Jitterbug there made me happy or made me miss Cuddles more. Oregon is an oddity when it comes to voting, they are mailed their ballots and they mail them back in. They are also a closed primary state, so people must be registered as a democrat to vote for Bernie! We have the same issue in California, and that brings us to today. Voter turnout is crucial, and most people registering to vote will be voting for Bernie, so I want to devote as much time as possible to registering voters, and then I want to continue on to the DNC in Philly this July. They will hear OUR voice. They will know OUR might. It’s dark outside now so the views are no longer there to distract me. Here is where it gets difficult. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for so many people. The level of love and support I am getting from people is so fantastic. I have named a fraction of those I have met along this trip that have helped me, I am trying to write down something about every person I meet in my journal, every person who I can talk to and possibly help, Jose the owner of 559 Smoke Shop in Brooklyn, Maria, the sweet transgender woman who was so timid and shy when I first met her, but was phonebanking and facebanking like a pro within 2 visits to HQ, JoAnne (from Brooklyn) the amazing woman who opened her home to me in Portland, claiming she didn’t cook, but there was always something good in the fridge to eat, I’ll end up in Portland again just to visit her and enjoy the beauty of the city again. I met a guy on the train on his way home from college. He is now registered to vote. His name is Andy, he’s on his way home from his freshman year at college, and his biggest concern is the criminal justice system. Mandatory minimums and prison over crowding. I encouraged him to get involved, he said there were some protests at his school, I told him there should be a Bernie office in Santa Barbra pretty soon, or at least one pretty close to there. He’s voting for Bernie. That’s one more vote for Bernie! Doing this work is easy, it’s what I have in my heart, I think Bernie can help our country in ways no other candidate will. His consistency over his entire career fighting for the poor and the ignored, fighting against corporations and pharmaceutical companies gouging the dying inspires me to fight for him. Like I said I have had so many people help me along the way, and the fight is still going. People have helped me with travel expenses, people have offered to buy me dinner, and people have helped me when I couldn’t afford my medicine since I don’t have insurance anymore. If you support Bernie, and want to help me keep fighting for him through the convention I obviously cannot do it alone. Bernie Sanders isn't just a candidate, he is a community, and I am calling out to the community for assistance. A grocery store gift card, money to help pay bus fair, taking me out to dinner if I’m in your town, anything is appreciated as I continue fighting for Bernie. Fighting for US!
