Funding Liz #forEdward

£2,813 of £15,000 goal

Raised by 67 people in 17 months
I lost my son Edward in December 2016, within a few hours of him contracting Meningitis W.

Edward was a very fit, healthy and active, very popular 10 year old boy, who was larger than life, who lived life to the full.  He knew so many people, he did so many things.  He swam for LSA Swimming Club, he was on the Rookie Lifeguard programme, he entered several Triathlons; he played football, tennis and, indeed, any other sport he could fit in; he was a very active member of the Cub Scouts; he played Cornet with Lancashire Music.

Since Edward’s death I have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of meningitis within the community.  And with the help of the community … and beyond, more than £97,000 has been raised in 18 months.

I devote an enormous amount of time to my charitable work, to be honest, most of my time, and would love to continue doing this charitable work and more.  Currently though, my husband works away a lot, I'm a busy mum to two other children (aged 14 and 7), I work pretty much full time on my charity work, and indeed am still grieving for my son ... and I have a part time job to fit into this mix too.  I am finding things increasingly difficult to fit in and am unable to take on any more with the time and resources I currently have; therefore I am appealing to the public and to businesses to sponsor me in pursuing my charity endeavours so I can do this as a full time job.   This would enable me to reach further into the community where we live, and beyond.  There is no doubt, this helps me; this is my time with my son, he is my drive to do all that I do; but the fundraising and awareness is about so much more.  It is about communities coming together, living life, taking inspiration from Edward’s love for life, and his sheer determination to challenge himself, to try new things, to live life to the full and to live it now.  This “spirit of Edward” has inspired so many people, both children and adults alike, in so many ways, whilst also and more importantly, raising awareness of meningitis.

I have been approached by many people asking if we can do something just #forEdward.  Edward was, is and always will be my drive, but he is also the drive of the community so it seems befitting to try and raise money #forEdward to support projects within our local, or even wider community in Edward’s memory, which is why I have set up a charity in his name too, The Edward Dee Fund.

I know that many in the community have contributed so generously, and on so many occasions, but I am asking now for your support to sponsor me … to buy into me, and into the “spirit of Edward” to enable me to continue my charity work in raising awareness of the disease, and raising money to enable community projects to be funded in Edward’s name; whilst also still supporting Meningitis Now, and indeed research projects with other meningitis charities; reaching more and more people with information and awareness of the disease.

There are many costs to cover if I am to do this.  In addition to myself there would be costs involved with branding, fundraising aids, awareness materials, printing costs, merchandise etc, and I am now appealing to the public to fund me for time and resources, and to appeal to the public this time to support me in my endeavours to continue raising awareness and money, still within the community where we live, but also further afield.  Whatever you’re able to donate in support, whether £1, £5, £50 or £500, all will help enable me to continue my work raising awareness of meningitis.

For anyone wishing to help support with sponsorship, businesses in particular, I will happily share my thanks on social media, and of course in future articles which feature in the press etc.  I have appeared many times on Radio Lancashire, and I have also appeared in Lancashire Life magazine (March issue). Hopefully, I can give back some fabulous PR to some local businesses supporting a very local, and personal cause.  Three businesses have already agreed to an annual sponsorship, but I'd like to work with a few more.

Thank you so much for reading my story.  I hope to hear from you, and indeed work with you in the future.  Together Everyone Achieves More #forEdward.

This beautiful poem was written by a very lovely lady. Thank you so much Mary Downham xxxxxxxxxx

I hugged a lady
and an Angel today,
Then hurried merrily
on my way..
I invited her for coffee
her guardian angel too,
His name is Edward Dee
And fills there hearts with glee..
I caught her just in time
she was feeling a little low,
By the time she left she was wearing
a very happy glow.❤️
You both must visit soon,
You filled my home with love,
Ed the guardian angel
Who visited from above..
Since meeting you both
I feel very blessed,
to know I hugged
Only the best...
They called you early Ed
which hurt so very much,
But now when they
close there eyes,
they can feel your
special touch❤️
The rain on there face
The wind in there hair
Knowing you are
always there.
Your flame is glowing
For others too,
And that we understand,
as I hugged
mum tight,
I new right then
And there
that your
Her special
guiding light..
She hears you Ed loud
and clear
feeling that flame
it’s always near.
Hold on tight to mum
and all.
Just like she held you,
When you were small...
Squeeze her tight in her
Darkest hour
She’s your mum a
Beautiful flower..
For all the “why’s”
And “ifs” and “butts”
For all the tears
And pain,
One day
you’ll allBe back
together again.

I better shut up now
As I’m not one to
chatter.
Pinocchio is in fits of laughter,
I don’t know why!!!
Oh no
did I just lie ...

Really touched that Hayley wanted to sponsor me with her own money. She saw that I was asking people to sponsor me for the price of a brew, and said that she'd like to do that. #buyLizamilkytea
