The Real Junk Food Project - Fuel For School, was launched on Tuesday 8th December 2015, after successfully feeding 10,000 children breakfast using nothing but intercepted food surplus.

Fuel For School

Nearly one year on and TRJFP Leeds has now successfully signed up 32 schools to its Fuel For School programme, at a cost of £2600 per school, delivering an educational package Service Level Agreement, using surplus food to empower young people to help us combat local, national and global food waste issues. Along with assemblies, workshops and training, TRJFP Leeds currently delivers approximately 3-5 tons of surplus food each week to the 32 partnered schools.

This resource is then made available to all teachers, parents and children on a #Pay As You Feel basis, generating a funds and a sustainable income for all school involved to reinvest in their pupils. Over 10,000 young people and parents per week gain access to fresh fruit and veg, bread, non-perishable items and much more...increasing the nutritional content of their diets, whilst helping to save the planet at the same time.

Operationally, the SLA income is used to reinvest in people. We currently employ 27 members of staff across the city at the National Living Wage Foundations recommended £8.45 per hour, creating a better quality of life for those involved.

This in effect, created the UK's first 'waste-food' supermarket and the first #PAYF supermarket in the world, based in Pudsey, Leeds.

Featuring on Hugh Fearnley Whittingstalls' - War on Waste, and to be fatured on Jamie Olivers' - Jamie & Jimmys' Friday night feast, Fuel For School is receiving national media exposure, TRJFP Fuel For School is quickly becoming a internationally recognised programme dealing with core issues such as - holiday hunger, child malnutrition, global food waste issues, environmental concerns and much more.

A partnered school recently received an Ofsted report of 'good' after previously receiving a 'satisfactory', due to increase attendance within the school. The respective head teacher was questioned on how he had done this and his reponse was ' Fuel For School'

In order for us to empower every single child in the city of Leeds, we need your help. The educational outcomes, social and environemtnal benefits of Fuel For School have exceed all expectations, and we want to ensure that no child in Leeds does not benefit from this service. At a cost of £2600 per year, we want every single primary school in Leeds to instantly gain access to TRJFP Fuel For School. For every £2600 reached, we can ensure another school, and another 300 -500 children have access to nutritional valued food, join our global campaign against food waste, and help Leeds become the UKs first zero food waste city.
